In the midst of a blizzard here in SD. Plenty of wood; still have power; and roads are closed even if we could get out of the driveway.

Taken a couple of hours ago:

doesn't look like much, but we're in a protected hollow; quite a bit more surrouonding us; and it's still coming until nearly noon tomorrow. No more gardening here this year!

Wow. I was sweating earlier today and the tomatoes were drooping because of the heat/lack of water. Very different from what you are getting.

I'm praying for rain. My rain barrel is about empty and I have seedlings just started.

I hope that you get it. We hadn’t had rain in a while. I had to water everything in containers earlier this week.

That is an incredible (and beautiful) photograph, but wow, no more gardening for sure.

OMG .... even the Garden Thread is a victim of the government shutdown .... who knew? /s/

We’re going to be running near 90 tomorrow .... very humid tonight ... tropical storm Karen coming in Monday with several inches of rain in the forecast.

I am going to the State Fair tomorrow ..... looking forward to it!

Ive got 2 droopy tomatoes: mongrels if I’m any judge. One is about 5-6” tall, sprouted where they were planted last year. The other mangy mutt’s about 14-16” of lanky stem that was straggling along the ground under our bird feeder, with its roots tangled in an iris root; didn’t even have enough guts to stand on its own stem.

I lifted & potted them both yesterday morning, before we left for the day; when we go back both were totally wilted.

Watered them again, and put them under a fluorescent until I went bed around 4 AM, and the small one had perked up; the other one took until this afternoon to raise its leaves out of abject surrender to death. Looks like they’ll survive long enough for me to kill them before Spring.

Looking for tips on South Florida upside down tomato growing - if anyone knows any. I don’t have the cheap topsy-turvy things, but some good canvas ones w/trays and a wick waterer.

I tried doing it two seasons ago with homemade buckets, but the humidity and rain got to them. I hope that the tray (keeping out all the rain) and the wick will solve this.

Not looking for little tomatoes, but realize the real big ones aren’t easy to pull off.

Anyone w/ any hints on which plants to purchase and where to purchase them - I’d be greatly appreciative.

Everyone have a great weekend!

Obama, in collaboration with NASA & HARRP, did it. The Wind Cave bison herd was ignoring orders, and posing for pictures along the highway that runs through the park. If they wouldn’t cooperate with the closures, then he’s make sure nobody could see them.

My apologies regarding this week’s thread. I thought I would be able to sneak away and at least ping the list, but no such luck. Then when I tried to copy the message and the ping list, the hotel computer just won’t let me do it.

As I noted on last week’s thread several times, I am in Branson Mo. at a conference this week. If I had known that I wouldn’t have been able to get to the list etc. I would have had someone else take over.

Last year, I had no such problems. I am in a different hotel, but still part of the same chain, so I just didn’t anticipate the problems.

Every time I tried to slip away, someone caught me and held me up so that I couldn’t get away.

Apologies, again to all. I’ll ping the list when I get back home to explain to everyone. Till then this is the offical thread for the week.

Thanks for taking the initiative.

Weather is still nice here in the Chicagoland area (was 75 or so today); and we are still working to find an easy, inexpensive way to cover our tomatoes as they are growing very well and look great; they seem to like our new place [their location] which we moved into Sept. 1&2.

The walking onions are all coming up now, and I've grabbed a small sampling of their greens. Extremely tasty. There are beets coming up, swiss chard, radishes, and some lettuce too.
