The fat lady has sung?!
Bush’s fault! Republican’s fault!
I’m sorry to hear this.
PING
Opera prices through the roof, NYers paying way to much to live in the suburbs even, NY programs simply invite importing low life’s and they think it opera can survive?
Handwriting on the wall. Opera depends on donations from well-to-do donors who are into culture. And it’s pretty clear what is going to be happening to THEIR disposable income once DeBlasio becomes Mayor.
Sad news. I’ve always enjoyed the NYC Opera productions I have seen on PBS. I don’t go to the opera anymore here in Houston. My wife and I were season ticket holders for several years. The expense was one reason we stopped going. The main reason was the “Eurotrash” style of production that seems to afflict every opera house these days.
But I assume the Metropolitan Opera is still in business?
I had friends who were members of City Opera (the chorus). I’m sorry to hear this. Of course, the last production I saw was several years ago “Candide” with John Cullum. Then they moved out of Lincoln Center. I often wonder if it was in some stupid liberal reaction to the Koch Brothers buying the building. That plus unions.

Some business strategy they got, don’t opera lovers usually have a lot of money? Can’t they afford to buy tickets?
She died in 2007 from inoperable lung cancer. She would be devastated about the closing of "her" opera house.
The NYC Opera was an integral part of the city's culture for many decades. It helped introduce fresh, young singers like Sills, Placido Domingo and the great bass, Samuel Ramey.
Our country's iconic cultural places across the fruited plain will collapse one by one due to Obama's marxist economic policies. We're actually in a depression right now (though no one dares to speak the word)...... and more and more folks can no longer afford outside entertainments and amusements other than those in their own television, music, movie and electronic set-ups in their homes. It's both scary....and saddening.
Leni (classical music lover of the first order)
Went to NYC Opera many times. A highlight was Samuel Ramey as Mephostophlies in 1977. And incredible night at the opera.
Could be from all the Peter King singing.
The Minneapolis Symphony has been on strike now for a year.
This is evidence that the country is getting poorer. People can’t afford to give like they used to.
I’ve been there several times. The prices (as far as concerts go) were not bad - I would buy a subscription, and everyone would divvy up the tickets and pick an opera. The NYC opera had light opera - I remember attending Die Fledermaus the night Clinton won the presidency.
One of the things I really liked about it was that it had subtitles! It ran across in a dark blue band above the stage, so it wasn’t invasive, and you could tell what was being sung. Opera is really fun to go watch, even if you don’t listen to it.
