Surviving the Big Shutdown Live Thread
October 1, 2013 | Pan_Yan

Posted on 10/01/2013 4:43:00 AM PDT by Pan_Yan

Despite the palpable fear in the air I ventured out this morning and headed towards The City. Everything seemed calm- traffic flowing, street lights on- but I'm taking no chances. Even on Free Republic the normal early morning posts to the prayer threads and Religion Forum seem tense.

I figured the rioting won't start until dawn when the government workers who are oh-so-vital to keeping our society funcitoning on every single level don't show up.

Please post your updates as our society plunges into chaos, spins out of control, or whatever other cliche you'd like to use.

I’m no budget wizard so I don’t know but as we are a “defense family” having served 30 years, I kind of pay attention to stats on defense spending...but nothing real specific...my eyes tend to glaze over.

Those percentages look familiar...I think they’re right....
To paraphrase one of many slimey lib dims...

If the President has determined that one-third of the gov workforce is non-essential, shouldn’t that be a starting point for talks on spending cuts?

Oh yeah...
And while everyone on the Hill is idle, maybe a tutorial on their Constitutional fiduciary responsibilities is in order so they can prioritize those cuts....(delusion setting in).

We have the government we submit to. Remember that.

This morning, my cat did not wake me up like she usually does. Obviously she’s a non-essential federal employee...

But my car still started and the lights still came on at the office when I got there. I just hope the car will start again when it’s time for me to go home, because I’m just not sure how long it’ll function without an operating federal government!

FOX newsette just said they’re shutting down the Grand Canyon!!! Do they pack it up and store it during a shut down?

No. They hire media consultants to issue press releases about it, 20 temporary staffers to man the help line and 50 guards to keep everyone from finding out the canyon looks exactly the same during a shutdown.

They wouldn’t get away with it if it were not for the full cooperation and complicity of the media.

Have they turned NASA’s Voyager 1 prob back around to Earth or does it just park itself and power down somewhere out there?

LOL, You cannot close down the scenery. We are 12 miles east of Zion National Park. The main part of the park is closed however the highway is open all the way. Here is what it looks like here this morning as the sun actually came up.

Like most government programs once it starts it is impossible to turn back. I'm sure they will, however, stop posting pictures for school children because that's how our government rolls.
