Very interesting, thanks for posting.
Panther tank with "IR Solution A":
When UK and US tanks can go long distances and the Panther can cover 150 km before something breaks down, that’s a pretty big weakness.
Fantastic find! I was always curious about the French experience with the Panther.
I think I remember the guns off of old Panthers getting mounted on AMX-13s after the French were done with their Panthers.
Excellent article! Thanks for sending it out..
My uncle who went all through the Bulge and more, said the Panzer was to be horrify-ably feared. He only encountered a few, and they would blow the sh*t out of a Sherman head on with the deepest Sherman armor. A side shot was instant death, he said the main objective was to NEVER be caught on the flanks by a Panzer.
Thankfully, he explained, he had only encountered a few, and the Panzers were used to move troops up where he was (they would hide behind the Panzers). But shots on the Panzers from the Sherman were pitiful.
I am no historian, so I cannot totally vouch for this recollection. I am sure other Freepers have more statistics.
Oh, I remembered after posting this, he had a neighbor who was in Africa (Afrika), and he told me (my Uncle) that the Panzers could out-range the Shermans by FAR. He said they were sitting ducks when they would form up columns, and that Rommel used that range and speed to just obliterate American tanks.
The Tank crews were so afraid to go out, because of Rommel, they had a hard time pressing them into battle.
Others would have to confirm this.
Great reading. Thank you.
The post war production of the Bf 109 was more due to convenient do to a large quantitie of spare parts and tooling to continue production...It was as not due to any inherent great quality. n fact the Czechoslovakian version the CS99 had to be re-engine with jumo 211 bomber engines after the stock pile of the original db605 engines were sabotage. .the resulting aircraft the CS199 was so bad it was called The Mule..its only claim to fame was it was the first fighter of the Israeli AF..and that was because it was the only thing they could buy
Son was a tanker in Iraq invasion, so I found this article to be interesting. Never saw this site before either. Thanks for the post.
I’ve seen the Panther and Tiger up close and personal at the George Patton museum at Ft. Knox Kentucky. They are both beautiful machines, especially the Tiger.
Tread head ping list ping.
The French replaced the transmissions to give the Panther’s high speed reverse. :^)
Was to the Panther that had the excruciatingly slow turret? The Shermans could maneuver to the side of the Panthers and shoot for the vulnerable sides before the Germans could bring their gun to bear.
Very Interesting, thanks

The panther could overcome the slow traverse by neutral steering but only at risk of breaking the final drive and immobilizing the vehicle.
