Oh, I remembered after posting this, he had a neighbor who was in Africa (Afrika), and he told me (my Uncle) that the Panzers could out-range the Shermans by FAR. He said they were sitting ducks when they would form up columns, and that Rommel used that range and speed to just obliterate American tanks.
The Tank crews were so afraid to go out, because of Rommel, they had a hard time pressing them into battle.
Others would have to confirm this.
The Shermans in North Africa had bolted armor, instead of welded. Not a good idea. Also, the relative advantages of the Panther tank were magnified in desert warfare.
