The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
My main frustration this year is with the bell peppers. I have had exactly ONE small pepper from twelve plants.
But hey, they are starting to bloom like crazy now. Two weeks from frost.
Last year I had more than I knew what to do with.
I put in bonemeal with my seed potatoes. The dog dug them up. Must have been like doggie crack to her.
I still remember when a cousin of mine visited and decided to help out in the grandparent’s garden. She suckered the tomato plants. Problem is, she thought all those yellow thingys were the suckers.
Thanks for all the links. I’ll be checking those out. Can’t do too much this weekend or next week. Will be out of town for a week-leaving on Sunday. Limited computer access.
Boy-I hear ya. Me too.LOL
My gardens are almost finished. Just got a few peanuts left, some pepper plants, and scraggly tomato plants. Can’t even find any of the tomatoes with enough green or even flowers to mess with taking starts.
I have 2 sugar baby melons trying to ripen- hoping they beat the frost. Won’t get to do much on the winter garden till 2cnd week of October.
I can recall my years as a teenager when us kids would get together and plow/disc three or four garden plots with the neighbors tractor, then come back and plant seeds. Corn, tomato, squash, beans......we never worried about it afterwards because it was almost guaranteed to produce a crop.
I wonder why it seems to be so much of a hassle today.
LOL. I’ll bet your dog thought: I’ve died and gone to heaven. Maybe you should have given the dog a great big beefy bone to chew on as a distraction.LOL
My okra grows to about 8ft high and produces a couple pods every two-three days. They look like walking sticks, not bushes. What's your secret?
Ive learned about too much phosphorus being a burn agent if used in excess.
Did you use the 3% rock phosphate or something else with a higher percentage? I use the 3% and I put a handful in every hole that I'm planting tomato's in.
SJ,
Are you guys getting any rain over there? I went to Comfort today..no rain, Center Point, cars pulled off road from all the rain, Kerrville, dry as a bone. It is raining good here now, so I guess I should turn off my soaker hoses.
Marcella,
Got around to planting more onions, Daikon Radishes in the garden, and under the grow light, some seeds of pak choy, toy choi, and marigolds.
Is three inches from the top of the flats about right for the grow light to get them to germinate?
I got out a tape maeasure this morning, and measured two of my tomato plants that are 8 and a half feet tall. I had guesstimated yesterday, but didn’t want to be telling tall tales, so decided to “officially” measure them. I did see green tomatoes on them.
FWIW, my tomatoes have done pretty good this year, and I wondered if planting a bunch of marigolds around them helped. I always worry about spider mites with marigolds, but they are mite free.
Thank you, I’ll see if I can find it locally, meaning in Texas.
Cause we think about it, now. As kids we didn’t, it just got done.
Put the lamp as close to the top of the container as you can without touching it. Due to Johnny telling me he uses 5 oz. paper cups, that’s what I use and put the lamp as close to the top of the cup as I can without touching it.
Once the seeds do their thing, raise the lamp as the plants grow, keeping the lamp one or two inches from the top of the plant. If you keep the lamp low to the plant, it won’t grow spindly. The plant will reach for the light and if it’s high above the plant, it will head there instead of growing a good stalk.
I envisioned you having to stay up 24/7 to keep moving the light away from your Tromboncino Squash.
Thank you so much for sharing your discoveries! I’ve learned so much from y’all! God Bless!
This is so sad. Y’all don’t want to hear what I’m thinking.
Do y’all have a 4H high school FFA chapter? I’m going back there this spring to pick up whatever plants they’re growing!
Funny you should mention that. Our mailbox was whacked sometime last night. We have a security system but Mr. Sg shut it off overnight.
God Bless Darlin!
We knew what you meant lol!
