Sightings of fighter jets over New Jersey lit up social media Monday afternoon.
The F-16 jets were escorting a small plane flying in restricted airspace in New Jersey, according to a federal official.
Security both on the ground and in the air have been tightened during this week’s General Assembly of the United Nations on Manhattan’s East Side.
The plane was flying in New Jersey airspace approximately 20 miles south of New York City, the official said.
Witnesses tweeted, “Fighter jet over Monmouth County... holy loud!” and “How about that fighter jet joy riding above lincroft” (see Storify below).
The fighter jets escorted the plane to Monmouth Executive Airport, where it landed without incident.

How close is this to Mercer Co airport? Lots of work going on there.
I used to get warmup fly-bys on the Delaware River when they had fly-bys for sporting events in Philly. That has been discontinued.... for 3 more years
