Screen problem with Nexus 7
me ^ | me

My son's Nexus 7 has developed several lines that run across the screen. They are on the side that has the power/volume buttons. The screen is not cracked nor scratched. I have tried doing a system reboot, but the problem remains. We just bought it in April, so I suppose it still has a warranty. I have no idea if we still have the receipt or box though. My son says that he didn't drop it, but who knows? Any ideas on what the problem might be? I tried google searching but didn't have much luck. Most of the links referenced cracked screens and flashing pixels, neither of which is the problem.

That’s clearly hardware failure. It will likely get worse. I would check with the manufacturer about the RMA process.

Well, that’s unfortunate. I’ll check with Asus then I suppose.

My guess is probably bad driver circuitry in the LCD interface, especially if the lines are always present and don’t move around. Hardware problem—should be replaced without question if in warranty; not economically reparable, IMHO.

Looks like the first generation Gameboy LCD screens. They all developed lines like that after a few years. I think you had to get the screen replaced to fix it.

My big laptop screen has lines just like that (but on the bottom half inch) when it has been out in the cold, but it clears up when it gets warm. My guess is that part of the display is not seeing full voltage (or maybe pulse width) for some reason. If it is because it has been subjected to high humidity at some point, it may eventually heal itself. If it is something defective within the structure of the screen, it probably won't.

Hardware.. probably vid chip (overheat)... did he have it in direct sunlight while using it (or maybe leave it on while exposed to direct sunlight or heat)?
Check the warranty..

My first LCD widescreen monitor was an NEC. I purchased it about 6 years ago.

After about a year [just after the warranty expired, of course], it developed a black line that extended from one side to the other in the middle of the screen. Soon, another developed near it. And another. And another, until it was a solid black bar nearly 2 inches wide. After the monitor was on a while, at first, the bars would disappear eventually. Then, they stayed on.

I finally replaced it with an AOC 23.5” LCD, which, now, is almost 2 years old, and I have never had a problem with this one.

NEC is on my junk list with Lexmark inkjet printers and Samsung laptops and DVRs.

Zora and Pris never drove me Batty during the Nexus 6 era :-). They were far better models.

Asus makes nice monitors, but they are very delicate and easy to break IMO.

If I don’t get on a thread in the first few posts, all the good lines are taken...
