Every year, millions of Americans watch the Super Bowl, some just for the fabulous new commercials.
Next year, it's quite possible there's going to be an ad for marijuana.
This bizarre story begins with the company Intuit. USA Today reported in July:
The minuscule budgets of small businesses often hinder their marketing power. But now, one small firm will join mega marketers on the biggest advertising stage of all: the Super Bowl.
On Wednesday, software provider Intuit kicks off a contest that will award one small business with a 30-second Super Bowl XLVIII commercial. The third-quarter ad will likely be seen by more than 100 million viewers.
The contest was called Small Business Big Game.
Now enter the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws which submitted an entry last week and announced this week that it is now in first place in the voting.
But the fight has just begun. Future rounds of the contest include Intuit employees voting for the four finalists in late October, and then the world voting on the winner.
As such, coming in first in the opening round doesn't ensure victory, particularly as the Intuit employee vote could be a hurdle.
In 2011, Intuit revoked the merchant services account of an Oregon medical marijuana clinic for what it deemed "unacceptable business practice."
But things may have changed since then.
An Intuit spokesperson said in a statement Tuesday, “We have no stance on medical marijuana as a company...By design, we’ve had a diverse range of businesses entering Small Business Big Game and sharing their unique stories with the world.”
With that in mind, you might be watching a pot commercial with your family and friends this February.
As a humorous aside, the picture above comes from a blog at the San Francisco Chronicle website sfgate.com.
Pictured inside the marijuana leaf is a Miami Dolphins player.
Makes you wonder what that author was smoking!

I have had debates with libertarians online who proposed “decriminalizing” kiddie porn.
Seriously.
roll on down the slippery slope America...
and part of the reason is because we have people...freepers...thinking weed use is just peachy...
same dopes who voted against Romney and then complain day and night about the creep in chief...
Don’t you mean, “one less thing government WILL be able to tell people NOT to put in their bodies”?
Kiddie porn should remain illegal, as it involves people who cannot legally consent to it. Any sane libertarian would agree with me (emphasis on “sane”).
I imagine the tobacco companies are pretty steamed that pot can be advertised but cigarette commercials are verbotten.
I’m not sure weed use is peachy, but right now, its manufacture is mainly in the hands of people who would cheerfully chop our heads off and cut our tongues out for a spot of turf. There are also small growers, who have to risk having their crop forcibly appropriated by the gangs. Legalizing it would give us a chance to defund the gangs by having legal manufacture, production and sale for much less than “street value.” The THC content could be regulated, so as not to be above a certain level or intensity (pot currently has a THC content about 100 times that of marijuana in the 1960s, meaning that one joint can send you to the moon).
(Such manufacturers would do well to be heavily armed, however, as they would have to compete with the gangs, mafia, etc.)
and then there are the ones who want to abolish the age of consent
Yes, there could be. BUT don’t go advertising, say, pizza or chicken nuggets to children. MO is ALL upset about that kind of stuff lately.
Dream on.
Well, if we are going to have a Brave New World, we will certainly need lots of Soma.
won’t matter to me... i won’t be watching.
i haven’t watched a ‘game’ ever since the NFL went fag friendly
I knew that didn't look right when I typed it....
If so, this viewer will not watch the game.
Indeed, inhaling anything that is burning is unhealthy & should be discouraged.

Meh. I'm much less concerned about marijuana than alcohol. It's mostly decriminalized in my state, has been for years & no one cares. You sound like people who yell that CCW expansion will ruin the U.S.
and part of the reason is because we have people...freepers...thinking weed use is just peachy...
As for me, I don't care what adults put into their bodies. But then, I'm for small government.

Well, I know I don't for liberals in any party.

You mean a CRAPPER ad?
Yet another reason I am glad I do not watch the Super Bowl.

You must have never run into Maui Wowie or Alaska Thunderf***. You can still get the 1960’s trash ,, it’s brought in by the truckload from Mexico.
Did you watch in the past with all the beer commercials?
