Why AMC's 'Breaking Bad' is the new novel
Los Angeles Times ^ | September 19, 2013 | Mary McNamara

Critic's Notebook: With an ending firmly foretold, the powerful 'Breaking Bad' ushers in a novel twist to TV as more series tinker with form, function.

Going into Sunday's Emmy telecast, all eyes are on "Breaking Bad." It's picked up a slew of acting awards during its five-season run and is this year's odds-on favorite for drama series; as the show moves toward its Sept. 29 finale, its ratings have almost tripled since last year.

I tried to start watching it on Netflix, but I couldn’t really get past the first episode....maybe it gets better, but I haven’t tried since then.

I too turned BB off after 20 minutes in to the first episode. Hype > Bang.

On the other hand, I totally got sucked into “Mad Men”. I watched all 6 seasons in about three weeks a few months ago. Can’t wait for the final season to see what happens.

Keep at it. It grows on you.
You won’t be sorry. Promise.

I was that way with ‘Mad Men’.
I tried and tried to watch it, but couldn’t understand what was so wonderful about this ‘soap opera’.
Kept reading about how great it was, and people kept telling me to watch it.
About half way through it hit me. I was hooked- so hooked I ordered all the episodes from Amazon and caught up in two days! Now I can’t wait for the next season to start!

You might check out Damages with Glenn Close and Rose Byrne.

“new novel” = old entertainment vehicle product.

And don’t forget the BBC version. I watched both sets over the same weekend, FU is even more cold blooded. Then I read the books, they’re good too.

On your Netflix stream search for “house of cards trilogy (BBC)”, autocomplete should get you there pretty easy. It’s 3 4 episode seasons, so you can finish the whole thing in pretty much the same amount of time as the season Netflix has out.

Truth be told, the second and third seasons of the Brit version are basically them doing the same thing with diminishing returns. But that first season is fantastic and the subsequent ones still pretty good.

The way the conflicts change keep them interesting. Yeah second season is FU doing to the king what he’d already done to the PM, but boy does he do it to the king. And the way the wife comes into play on the third season, ho boy. 2 of the most “holy crap!” endings I’ve ever seen are in that show, seasons 1 and 3 are right there with season 1 of the Sopranos, I advice not watching them late at night so your yells of surprise don’t wake anybody.

But isn’t that the ricin capsule he took out of the switch plate in the first episode?

What is the BBC version? and what is FU?

Both sound interesting. No cable, so I am not that up on the latest tv shows.

Haven’t read through the rest of the posts, but I think Walt will try to redeem himself by avenging Hank’s death and rescuing Jesse in the process. Or, Walt will go on to become a member of Congress.
