No One Survives on Prepper Island
SHTF Plan ^ | 9/17/13 | No One Survives on Prepper Island

Within our group, we form a whole. No one person can be or buy everything. No one person can know it all or do it all. In this sense, it really will take a village to survive. Among the 10, two are specialists in the medical field, one is an engineer, others fit into the slots of scientist, former school teacher, active detective, great organizer, mechanic, accountant, DIYer, builder, writer, welder, seamstress, general repairman. Nearly all of us garden and cook – even the men – except for one whose cooking makes dog food look great. Most of the women are pragmatic and logical, squashing the old stereotype that women are neither. Most of us are Boomers so we’ve been around the block a few times without the blinders. Beyond this group of 10, others are close by that are similarly minded. This further broadens both the resources, skills and knowledge base. So this is by no means a commune or a group of cookie cutter personalities. It is a blending of talent.

Regardless of what brought us together, each knows that we can’t – nor do we want to – go it alone. We don’t talk prep stuff at every get together. Most of the time we just enjoy the fun. Over the years we understand each other’s skills as they are used frequently routinely whether it’s medical care, gardening, hunting, repairing, building, fishing, improvising. Without constantly belaboring the point, we know how neighbors have prepared and where their strengths lie and vice versa.

Any type of sustainable Gulcher type dealy would require younger people as well... otherwise it’s merely an prepper’s retirement community...

On the other hand, I always envision the unskilled starving hippies on the commune in Easy Rider... and I picture these dopey millenials in Ugg boots and skinny jeans as the modern equivalent. No skills... but they did watch Bear Grylls and have a backpack and BPA-Free water bottle.

Read two interesting books that relate to this subject:

“Going Home” and “Surviving Home” by A. American. Although “One Second After” addresses some of the issues, these two books explore the issue much more completely and are both good reads.

The Oath Keepers have started an effort called “Sleeping Giant.” Last Saturday’s meeting was about sustainability, but I think next months meeting will be about bug out bags.

I’ve long felt that the “lone prepper” was dystopian in more than one way. Not that one shouldn’t be able to do that, but there’s a humongous factor that’s gotten short shrift here: the Lord. Who makes the audacious promise of always furnishing, as asked, what’s necessary to glorify His name. Always. Always. Always. There’s your cornucopia. Don’t despise Him!

I think a church would be the ideal unit to prep. And that they should prep in such a way as to be able to take on at least a limited number of unplanned extras, putting usefully into play the work of the others. But most of all they should prep with the gospel once a reasonable amount of physical provisions have been stored.

Regardless of what one may think of their theology, the LDS folks are wonderful resources and an inspiration in regards to prepping. ‘Been there, done that’ f0r what, five generations?. I don’t need to be a Buddhist to learn Kung Fu :-)

LDS is a real stress test for Christian theology. By preaching a Christ at far less than His actual power (he’s God not just a spirit brother) they openly invite impostor spirits. But it’s not impossible in principle for Christ to put in an appearance to Mormons anyhow, based on the name. It’s not man’s theologies that make God who God is. God is the “I AM” not the “MADE BY MEN.” One would have to exercise great spiritual discernment when dealing with individual Mormons because of these two possibilities. Generally if one does accept the real Christ, he or she soon discovers his or her Lord won’t fit into the Mormon theology and will leave for, typically, a trinitarian evangelical church (though Roman Catholic or even Orthodox is possible).

So what does that have to do with prepping. Dunno. Maybe that’s just my rant. I do have a bit of an axe to grind about not throwing babies out with bath waters.

“Prepper Island” sounds like a good idea for a game show. Like “Survivor” should have been... you get to bring a certain weight of supplies with you, whatever you want. Whoever lasts longest with no outside help, no special prizes, wins the money.

Within any prepper group, each member of the group must trust each other member enough to put their life if the others hands without hesitation or question.

If you can’t do that, your group will not work.

Within any prepper group, each member of the group must trust each other member enough to put their life if the others hands without hesitation or question.

That's why I'm designing the perfect team: I'll have (1) a community organizer, (2) a professor of Gay Studies, (3) a grad student in African American Studies (alternatively, Hispanic Studies), (4) an undergraduate in fashion design, (5) a journalist with an MA in journalism and more than a decade of experience in the mainstream media, (6) a senior advertising executive, (7) an aspiring writer with a BA in English Literature, (8) TBD, (9) TBD, and (10) myself. I haven't decided the key career skills for my #8 and #9, but I know they will not include engineers, doctors/nurses, farmers, or any people who get their hands greasy or dirty. It should be paradise as imagined by ObamaVoters.

Note: One could certainly find people in some of the above careers who have practical skills in a SHTF world, but I'm looking for people who can help me to maintain the specialties that made America what it is becoming today. We will be a library to preserve all the Marxist thought and hyphenated-studies publications that allowed America to transition into a country that likes having someone with absolutely no qualifications in charge. What could go wrong?

Thank you. I don’t know how I forgot to include a lawyer and someone with the political connections to rake in tax dollars.
