How to Make School Better for Boys
The Atlantic ^ | SEPTEMBER 13, 2013 | CHRISTINA HOFF SOMMERS

Posted on 09/14/2013 9:03:13 AM PDT by rickmichaels

I recently appeared on MSNBC’s The Cycle to discuss the new edition of my book The War Against Boys. The four hosts were having none of it. A war on boys? They countered with the wage gap and the prominence of men across the professions. One of them concluded, “I don’t think the patriarchy is under any threat.”

The MSNBC skeptics are hardly alone in dismissing the plight of boys and young men. Even those who acknowledge that boys are losing in school argue that they’re winning in life. But the facts are otherwise. American boys across the ability spectrum are struggling in the nation’s schools, with teachers and administrators failing to engage their specific interests and needs. This neglect has ominous implications not only for the boy's social and intellectual development but for the national economy, as policy analysts are just beginning to calculate.

As the United States moves toward a knowledge-based economy, school achievement has become the cornerstone of lifelong success. Women are adapting; men are not. Yet the education establishment and federal government are, with some notable exceptions, looking the other way.

I spent two semesters as a visiting professor in Turkey,in the engineering school. My department chairman had received his PhD in the US. One day he remarked to me that the big difference between the engineering students he saw in the US and those in Turkey was that the US engineering students came to the university already familiar with hand tools.

Given the trend away from shop classes in US schools, I wonder if that's still true. When I was in high school (graduated in 1949), even those of us in the college track were encouraged to take one or more shop courses. I still have the stool I built in carpentry shop.

Since the schools are no longer teaching mechanical skills, it's more important for fathers to spend time with their sons building something, anything, to give them familiarity with tools and with the idea that "I could build that."

As Michael Savage said liberals are like mentally abused children who once they get power decide to abuse everyone else to “get even”-

They are not just looking the other way, they are actively orchestrating the demise of traditional males and their roles in society.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Indeed!

Why all the emphasis on anti-bullying, homosexual promotion, and pushing an hysterical anti-gun agenda?

Answer: To produce a nation of Peter Pan boy/men that are utterly incapable of defending themselves, their families, or their nation!

And...Have you noticed? Does it seem that in recent years there is an extraordinary number of “swishy” young men between the the ages of 15 and 30?

The National Rifle Association will win skirmishes but it WILL LOSE in the end unless the conservatives and Christians find a way to shut down the government school indoctrination camps.

I see. It’s everyone’s fault but the millions and millions of men in this country who have abandoned their boys by not marrying or staying married to their mothers.

And smart men won’t become teachers. It used to be an honorable profession for a guy — now it’s sneered at as “women’s work,” just like fetching coffee or answering phones.

So what did everyone think would happen when huge numbers of boys were abandoned and raised by women?

Guess it’s easier to blame “single moms” than to turn all this around by raising your sons and re-entering the teaching profession.

Indeed. And then these same liberal feminist women whine and complain that they’re “no good men around to marry.”

The government schools will not be reformed by having more men as teachers.

Why? Answer: Because government schooling is fundamentally the very definition of a godless, single-payer, and socialist-entitlement. That can’t be fixed. It must be abolished.

You may want to do a little research as to which sex initiates divorce more often. A clue, it ain’t men.

If the couple was not married, both sexes are equally culpable for the less than stellar environment for raising a child. But, it could also be deduced that since women initiate divorce more than men that no matter what a man’s intentions are, it just may not be possible for him to stay in his child’s life. You know, due to restraining orders and the like. Also, if the couple was not married, the man has very limited, if any, rights to the child. Though this does not impact his requirement to pay child support, whether he wanted the child or not.

Huh? Men still outnumber women graduating with degrees in math, science, and engineering. You know, the degrees that get good careers. And propel the nation ahead with technological innovation.

But yes, I agree that schools purposely hold back the boys. Expecting a boy to sit in a chair, quietly paying attention, and not moving around, isn't normal behavior. Boys and girls learn differently. Not one of my useless education classes mentioned that fact, BTW. But we got hours and hours about cultural diversity and other such crap.

When I let my calculus kids do a set of practice problems any way they wanted - the boys all got up and worked together on the whiteboards. All but 2 girls sat in desks, some working alone and some together. The boys were animated, talking loudly, but very engaged. All learned what they were supposed to - but the boys needed to do it in a manner vastly different from the girls.

The liberal education establishment tries to make girly-men out of our boys. Just because teachers don't want to deal with the energy level and action-oriented behavior that is perfectly normal for boys. (And necessary - how do they go about slaying dragons without it?)

I didn't know that. (Although your post wasn't directed towards me.)

Another reason why men need to be VERY careful these days when picking a partner. Guess it's not only the courts screw the men over.

Correction - smart men AND women don't become teachers. Who wants to be around liberals all day, be in a job where you cannot succeed no matter what because the NEA's policies over the last decades have dumbed down the schools so the kids you get are levels below where they should be and you can't fail the kids without getting in trouble yourself for it?

I have a teaching credential - but am embarrassed to admit that. I also quit after one year, as did all the engineers that were in my technology-to-teaching program. We learned quickly just how much education has deteriorated since we went to school.

how many of those degrees are in worthless “basket weaving” areas?

Where are the “quotas” to recruit male teachers?

Where are the “quotas” to set aside areas for boys?

Where is IX protections of boys sports?

school is becoming a bovine plaid bastion sanctuary of the incomptent.
