Zeppelins were once considered the future of air transport - but after the horror of the Hindenburg disaster, they disappeared from the skies for more than 75 years. Now a pioneering aviation firm hopes to bring back the airships in a bid to revolutionise the global market in transporting freight. The Aeroscraft is built using innovative technology which allows it to control its flight better than previous airships, so it should avoid the problems experienced by the first generation of zeppelins.

115 MPH IAS top end. About like our old Aeronca Champ on a good day.
Will require good flight planning for winds aloft.
Be really cool for heavy lifting jobs too - like bridge structures *IF* it can hover well. (vs. the Sky Crane)

[In the photos with the article] The guy on the left was a crewman on the Hindenburg, wasn’t he?

It would be neater if they had one which could move oil rigs...without the assembly and disassembly of the truck portable units we have now.

I can see these being very useful for disaster relief.

Its feet and belly button are kind of cute. I’d feel a little better if it didn’t fly with its eyes closed.

Blatantly stupid and ignorant journalists are a scourge.

The location is the former Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) in Tustin, CA and these hangers were originally for the Naval/Marine Blimps. Base was closed in 1999.
blimp tethered outside blimp hangar. (may not be Tustin)
Navy K-class blimps are stored in a Tustin hangar circa 1942.

Thunderbird!

I hope it is successful. I’d love to travel by airship.

"What's the word? Thunderbird!" Whats the price?
30 twice!
This was the refrain on "Thunderbird" wine in the 60's (I do believe I've just time dated myself). :O)

Could have been very useful addition to the logistics package for afganistan. 250 metric tonnes for the largest version, might take 10 trucks off the road.
To: Kaisersrsic
Its a big target that moves too slow militarily.
But for civilian cargo ut looks efficient, especially for things like oil rigs as suggested by another poster, or storage tanks and large hvac units for commercial buildings. Or prefabricated houses.
All those things difficult to move on the roadways.

Great. Now all a terrorist hijacker needs is a hang-glider and a pin to send thousands of Americans to their death. Who the EFF thought
this was a good idea?
