Apple goes plastic and colorful with new iPhone line

But the most significant news to come out of the event is a new security feature on the iPhone 5S called Touch ID, which is an app that allows users to use their fingerprint to access information in their phone.

The new function is essentially a fingerprint identity sensor in the home button on the phone that enables users to unlock their device. However, it can also be used as a substitute for passwords when making purchases, including in Apple's iTunes Store.

"Your fingerprint is one of the best passwords in the world. It's always with you," said Dan Riccio, Apple's senior vice president of hardware, at the event.

Apple broke tradition and rolled out two new colorful iPhones models, the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C, at its Cupertino event on Tuesday.

As expected the iPhone 5C, which features a plastic casing and starts at a subsidized price of $99, is cheaper than the iPhone 5S, which starts at $199. The iPhone 5C comes in multiple bright colors including green, pink, yellow and blue, while the iPhone 5S comes in gray, silver and gold.

allows users to use their fingerprint to access information in their phone.

And then the NSA has direct access to your biometric assets.

No thanks.

Who thought this would be a strong selling point after the NSA scandal?

They look like cheap toys.

I’m glad my wife and I switched to the Galaxy S3.

So Apple copied Nokia’s color scheme? How innovative...

I’ll wait for the Nexus 5.

DPS in Texas now takes thumbprints from both hands when getting a driver’s license.

I guess they figure you may lose one hand and so both should be on file.

Oh, and if you lose your driver’s license (along with your wallet, for example), they don’t have you scan your thumbprint again to prove your identity.

You have to provide at least 2 required documents (one of which is a Social Security card, to prove that you aren’t negligent in child support payments; the other can be a passport or birth certificate, I don’t recall the others).

It’s been this way for upwards of 15 years.

They look like cheap toys.

The 5C does. Actually, they are returning to the 3G/3GS days, before changing to the metal case for the 4/4S.

The 5S are brushed metallic finishes: gold, silver, and graphite.

But, there's only a $100 difference between the 5C and the 5S, and you give up a lot of features and performance.

I have the Samsung Galaxy 3 S as well. I know there is a devotion by many to Apple, but it seems many competitors have superior features to the Apple products.

A couple years back when I got a Droid phone the Verizon salesman (who also had the Iphone available) told me it beat the heck out of the Iphone in terms of speed.

It still seems to be true but so many people think of Iphone kind of like we used to call making a copy a “Xerox”.

My HTC Evo has been a pain since I bought it. The battery doesn’t make it to 3:30pm on standby. Half the time the screen is frozen when it is ringing, making it impossible to answer. It told me I have no room for email or messages, even though I had deleted all messages, email, and photos. I have had it reset to factory settings twice and within a week it was back to it’s bad old habits.

One by one my family and friends have switched from Droids to iPhones and are very happy to have phones that just consistently do what they are supposed to. I will be getting a new iPhone 5S before the end of the month.

Droid can go pound sand.

Doesn’t really matter what color your phone is anymore. Everyone puts cases on them to keep them from breaking when you drop them. Can’t really see the color with a case on them.
