I am going to dumping my old copper land line. I have looked at magic jack. This new one from Walmart looks good or better
Buy the device for $10. It connects to your router.
$10 per month for phone service in the USA
We dropped satellite tv in June. 3 months now, haven’t missed it for a moment. well, i do miss nascar. But otherwise, i don’t miss it.
"Collection" for 79 bucks they said I owed....never did get any comment or apology, but did get acknowledgement by way of a check for the $8.00 they actually owed me.
As I said before FTWC!
I got Magicjack 3 years ago and it works great. $19.95 a YEAR for phone serve with unlimited minutes and no long distance charges in US.
I also cancelled my cell phone when contract ended and got a TracPhone with 1200 minutes and a year to use them for less than $100.
Cut out a lot of waste of $$$$
We tried Magic Jack several years ago when we lived in a rural area. Didn't work for us because we were on a limited bandwidth internet connection via satellite. The sound quality and signal strength were just terrible.
Now that we're back in the city, it would probably work. We're on a solid copper line now, so I expect the performance would be a lot better.
Did people calling you from your home town have to pay anything to call you?
Hey, thanks for posting this. We’re paying $40/month through our internet provider for phone service. I wanted to look into Magic Jack but never got around to it. This lit the fire.
It was just a local call for them (assuming they were in Los Angeles for one of the lines, or Seattle for line 2). I could call anywhere in the US for free from either line.
Wife and I use Net 10. $85/month for unlimited voice, text and data. Uses AT&T towers, and have better connectivity here in FL than previously with Verizon for about 1/2 the price.

“If the power does go out again we’ll go to the library or Starbucks to power up our cell phones.”
As “victims” of frequent power outages in our rural area, we bought a few of the emergency radios that you crank to charge the battery. (A couple can be charged by solar as well by cranking.) All of them have USB ports for charging cell phones, and they actually do a pretty good job.
“I wish I could get internet only and no cable.”
Is Comcast in your area? We dropped our Comcast cable but kept their internet.
Thanks for that number porting trick.... I am leaning towards obi. Go you think it is worth getting one of the more expensive obi models?
That is exactly what we're doing. We told them in no uncertain terms we did NOT want any TV package at all, just internet. They set us right up. But every now and then, someone comes around to try the hard sell on us to get us to get the cable TV.
Magic jack for us is $40/year versus $45 or so every month for the land line after taxes, fees, other fees, user fees, Algore fees, and some fees on top of a couple of other taxes and fees.
Your cell phone is your backup in a power outage. Plus if using a laptop, a desktop battery backup unit will keep the modem, telephony device and laptop powered for a long time. At least an 1-3 hours I would guess.
Laptop battery would also be supplying juice

Our cell phone tower were rendered incapable during last long outage. Land line worked, nothing else. No power for 11 days.
Comcast is my problem. I can drop cable and get internet only and only save $10 a month.
BGH, are you saying majic jack offers internet without an outside phone line?
“Do you think it is worth getting one of the more expensive obi models?”
It probably is... But I didn’t check them all out. I am very happy with what I have though.
Correct.
Got my obie today from Newegg. Have not connected it, but will do so tomorrow. It came with printed instructions on using google voice with it which is very nice
Yes it works with other services besides g-voice

So far I’m happy with mine... you can make half of a car payment for what you pay on cable for a “bundle” deal.
