ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim may soon drop the Orange County city from their official name.
The Anaheim City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on new plans to keep the Angels in the city for the coming decades, but dropping of Anaheim from the teams name as part of the deal.
New negotiations could mean that the team would start paying the roughly $600,000 each year in upkeep for the stadium. The Angels could also make a multimillion dollar investment to completely renovate the stadium.
Under a new deal, the team could also develop land around the ballpark for profit.
That wouldnt bother me, but I dont like the Los Angeles in front, said fan Nancy Bennett, who has attended more than 2,500 games at the stadium. Were in Anaheim.
Dodgers fan Robert Cavazos agrees. Their name right now doesnt make a whole lot of sense, but I think Anaheim Angels would be the best name. Thats where theyre located.
the should rename themselves, “the identity crisis angels of anahole”.
I agree. It’s goofy already, though, with their current name...IMO, they need to pick one of the other. Either LA Angels and Anaheim Angels (or back to California Angels). The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim is one of the silliest names I recall.
I suppose if the New York Giants and NY Jets can play in New Jersey, the LA Angels can play in Anaheim, right??
I imagine it won’t be long before the atheists demand that they drop the “Angels” part too.
I think it was Jay Leno who said that their cross-town rivals are the “Los Angeles Dodgers of Los Angeles”
Orange county angels-still too close
How about Earth Angels?
Disgruntled fan.
I just want to know why they're not called "Disney's Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim."
Why is it that the world never remembered the name of Johann Gambolputty de von Ausfern- schplenden- schlitter- crasscrenbon- fried- digger- dingle- dangle- dongle- dungle- burstein- von- knacker- thrasher- apple- banger- horowitz- ticolensic- grander- knotty- spelltinkle- grandlich- grumblemeyer- spelterwasser- kurstlich- himbleeisen- bahnwagen- gutenabend- bitte- ein- nürnburger- bratwustle- gerspurten- mitz- weimache- luber- hundsfut- gumberaber- shönedanker- kalbsfleisch- mittler- aucher von Hautkopft of Anaheim?
The Pitcherless Angels of Anaheim has a certain ring to it.
Exactly, New York Giants and New York Jets don’t play in that city. Neither do Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins. Maybe some others are like that too.
When the Los Angeles Rams moved to Anaheim years ago, they kept the Los Angeles Rams name, and nobody said anything about them not being Anaheim Rams.
It was a marketing thing for the team to change their name to Los Angeles Angels. They wanted to draw fans from all over Southern California, not just primarily Orange County.
The sports writers tend to call them Los Angeles Angels and don’t include the “of Anaheim” in sports reports when discussing the team.
Even though they are in a suburb of L.A. they are still L.A.’s American League team.
Why don’t they just change it to Los Angeles de Los Angeles.
They can call themselves whatever they want, they’ll still suck.
Maybe Los Angeles should just sell naming rights to the city to Microsoft or Toshiba and be done with it.
“They can call themselves whatever they want, theyll still suck.”
That’s true the last few years. I’ve been a fan since I was a kid in the ‘70s. I can’t help it.
The were the first MLB team in SoCal...
SoCal Angels?
Hey, they’re the hottest team in baseball right now, so Arte can do whatever he wants.
It was a marketing ploy by Moreno to try to get more L.A. residents to drive down and fill seats in his stadium. Ridiculous. I agree with the poster above the said they should use the “California Angels” moniker from back in the day.
