When it came time to pick a little puppy pal for White House dog, Bo, the Obama family seems to have made the politically incorrect choice of purchasing a pure-bred instead of adopting a rescue dog from one of the many shelters that become the last stop for millions of dogs before they are euthanized.

Thank you, chris, you in particular, because the only reason I even knew of german shepherd rescue is because of your threads. I was not aware of organizations such as these prior to seeing your posts.
“Why not a rescue dog?”
Soooooo many possibilities.
Will the First Daughters help wok the dog?
Are you making fun of Malaria and Sharia?
And do you really think she has allergies?? The dog is purely “political”. I believe the first one was a “gift”. Bet the second one is, too.
The first one was a gift from Ted KENNEDY and wife.
Come now, rules are for the Little People, not King Putt and his brood. . .
As Bo appeared to be limited to photo ops, I suspect the reason for the second dog is puppies. Expect them to be “gifted” to special donors. (For only $5 million, you can have an historic Obama White House puppy...)
Will the new dog get its own airplane or will it have to suffer the indignity of sharing a plane to Martha’s Vineyard for vacation?
My fiancee and. I adopted 2 older chihuahuas from a local humane society. They look to be pure bred chis. They were not fixed and brought in as strayed. Their little ribs were sticking out. They were estimated to be 7 and 10th yrs old. The shelter let us take them with the understanding that once they put on some weight we would get them fixed. After we had them for 2 weeks I was so happy that they were gaining weight, and Dru started digging at the couch, and panting and hey, whoa, she just had a puppy. She delivered 3 healthy pups and then one week later, the 10 year old one had a puppy on my new comforter.
From what we have been able to piece together, some breeder put them out. Darla is a lap dog but has really bad panic attacks. We just hold her snugly and she will eventually stop trembling. Dru is very skittish. She doesn’t warm up very easy and squeaky toys terrify her. All the pups got adopted to good homes except for the runt. Tig is ours! So we have 4 rescue pups. 2 pure chis, one half chi half heaven knows, and a pure min pin with balance problems.
I gotta say though, I don’t think terrible people like the Obamas ought to own dogs in the first place.
A rescue dog? With no pedigree? Surely you jest! The Emperor, I mean the President, would not sully himself with such an unseemly animal.
Our first rescue dog was about 10 years ago, a purebred female boxer about 3 yrs old. Same story, skinny, ticks, just plain pitiful looking.
I was at Petsmart with a friend and they were having an adoption day from one of the local shelters. All the people were gaga over the puppies and this poor old girl was just standing in a cage with her head down with no one even going near her. I walked up to the cage and looked at her for a minute then squatted down and said something like hi old girl. She raised her head up and looked at me with huge deep soulful eyes.
I adopted her that day and picked her up after they had ‘fixed’ her. She turned out to be the most grateful dog and best dog we ever had. We lost her 3 yrs ago to pancreatitis. Eventually we rescued another dog, a part Boston Terrier part who knows but I will never have any other dog than a rescue now.
<3 <3!! That is a great :D
You know I am inclined to agree with you about the Obamas and their dogs, but then I think to myself perhaps the Obama’s dogs will teach them the same thing that I was taught by dogs.
And that is that love is the only thing that matters in this world. In the end, love is all you ever had, and it is the only thing you can take with you when you die.
I’m not sure the Obamas are capable of learning such a lesson, but perhaps it is only right that they be given the opportunity.
God bless you for doing that!
Your story makes me terribly sad and furious at the same time, but thanks to you, it has a happy ending.
That brings tears to my eyes to read. I would have adopted the boxer too.
That story reminds me of the 14 year old shepherd I lost two months ago. I saw him at the vet in an adoption area off to the side. His name was Grainger, and he was the biggest of a litter, all of his other mates had been adopted, but no one wanted him because he was a huge german shepherd. He was just sitting in a kennel all by himself :(
He came home with me about 1 week later, I had him from 1999-2013. You know I loved him so much that I know when I die, he is going to be the one I look to find first.
Also, just wanted to say that it’s going to be rescue dogs only for me from now on. Seeing how much some of these magnificent animals need help, and knowing how much I love them, that is what I want to do.
Why not a rescue dog?
Well, isn’t the question why not a transgendered-gay-undocumented resident-environmentally sensitive-marxist leaning-from a minority breed?
Of course such a dog would feed exclusively on spotted owl and snail darter, so I guess it’s back to the pet shop...
My question is, why 14 months old? Obviously trained by someone and cared for 14 months by another person. The first year of bonding and training the pup should go to the Obama family. The dog is probably looking for her person that she had with her all her life. Only well trained and work free pups allowed ? I have had many dogs over the years and the first year of training and was important. The 3 that wandered on to my farm were dumped and I lucked out as they were glad to see me and my welcome. Looks like the Obama’s like the work done and no fuss.
Thank you kindly, Catherine. I was unable to understand her circumstances as well, especially after getting to know her.
There is no way I could to this to her or any other dog for that matter. I just am not able to understand people some times. I can only imagine that the two people who did this must have been going through a very terrible time in their lives.
What happened to the last puppy?
I adopted a rescue beagle 4 years ago. He was abandoned in a little town called Buckley (hence his name) and was living on the streets when the police picked him up. He was chipped but the subscription was not active. Police made him a place to stay in one of their cells until the Beagle Rescue could find a foster home. He’s been a really great dog. :-) I’ve also adopted basset hounds and I think my next dog will also be a basset.
Oh no... the King must have only the finest in breed selection.
All our dogs during the years have been cast offs found at the pound! Our newest was found in the desert, a rabbit hanging from her mouth! She is a pit bull mix with a herding breed of some sort. She use to herd around our other dog ( now Deceased :-( ) and the cats, who lover her very much!
