The last sardine cannery in the United States closed its doors for good last month, due to "global competition, corporate consolidations and a general lack of appetite, at least in the United States." But not only is the small, oily, silvery fish inexpensive, easy to prepare, and loaded with things that are good for you, like Omega-3 fatty acids and calcium, its also one of the most sustainable fish around: The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program lists sardines as a "Best Choice" due to their abundance and high production rate. Usually canned sardines are thought of as a last resort for when you cant be bothered to cook, but reconsider. Here are some recipes......

I like them packed in Louisiana Hot sauce. Then I put them on a plate and sprinkle Old Bay seasoning on them. Not a grilled tuna steak, but pretty good for something that comes out of a can and is ready to eat in a minute.
What’s that green stuff? The sardines left over from yesterday?
The author of this screed is rather poorly informed.
Sardines are still fairly flying off the grocery shelves. Most stores are out of them or almost out, most of the time.
Funny thing about the Monterey Bay Aquarium: They owe their existence to the fact that the sardine fishery on the west coast got fished out.
That is an allergic reaction.
I get that same reaction from just smelling cantaloupe.
What to do with canned sardines?
For God’s sake man, help them find another job!!
“Bubba-Rides_A_Red_Horse-Sardines” just ain’t got that ring!
An old friend and I sponteneously went into a Dollar Tree store to play the “Dollar Store Challenge”... pick any $1 item as the most ridiculous gift to give to the other person... exchange gifts outside... hilarity ensues.
I bought a tube of “Baby Butt Paste”... she bought a can of Mackerel.
I saw it on the shelf tonight when I was making dinner... still makes me smile.
You didn’t find any of the $1 canned (probably imitation) crab?
OK...what is the difference between kippers and sardines.
here’s how to eat them:
pile up a
cracker,
thin slice of cheddar,
sardine (or smoke oysters!),
dash of hot sauce
wash down with a cold beer
mmmmMMMMmmmmmm........
I bought a tube of Baby Butt Paste”
What pray tell is Baby Butt Paste? Something like zinc oxide? I have a white elephant gift exchange every December for a bunch of girlfriends and neighbor ladies. Started out as eight of us - last year it was up to 22. May have to change from white elephant to a Dollar Tree Challenge. What a hoot!
Walmart is now selling a new "bagged" version of sardines. They are cheaper than most canned sardines there (under a buck a bag). They must not be the "top of the line" sardines. :-)
(This message goes out to all culinary connoiseurs with discriminating palates for sardines and other seafood delicacies...)
It’s very effective in preventing me from eating it, that’s for sure lol. Only other thing that does that to me is kimchee.
