"This weekend at Citizen's Bank Park...Charlie Manuel's 1000th Win Celebration. Charlie will be recognized prior to the game..." Instead they fired him.
This is the official release still on the Phillies website.
The Phils are dead in the water. 15 1/2 games out and above only woeful Miami. Firing Manuel with six weeks to go in the season will change nothing. A bush league move.
A class organization would have let him finish the season and get his 100th. win. If only in appreciation for 2008.
“He’ll be replaced on an interim basis by Ryne Sandberg.”
Hopefully we’ll get some of that Cubs magic...
Seems like odd timing. This year is a wash. I don’t kow why they wouldn’t just let him go after the season. Guys like Charlie deserve a dignified exit. Something must have gone down that led to this now. Especially with an honorary event this weekend.
Classless city, classless fans, classness ownership...get what they deserve.
Okay, so why can’t the Nationals fire Davey Johnson? He took a team with the best record in MLB last year, one that was an odds on favorite for this year’s World Series, and turned into one that is struggling to stay ahead of the Phillies. IMHO, he is certainly MLB”s worst manager of the year so far.
“The Phils are dead in the water. 15 1/2 games out and above only woeful Miami.”
Well at least we know what Philly Fan will be doing in October.
Booing the Eagles.
The tickets are prolly already sold and think of the $$$ the front office will save not having to give him gifts.
The teams stars are aging so they will probably go in a different direction and start off with a new manager. No more Walter Alston’s in this day and age. A team makes a run then cleans house. Walter Alston managed the Dodgers for 23 years on a one year contract.
First losing season in a decade. Class doesn’t put buts in the seats or dollars in the bank, and it might lose you a chance at a good candidate, firing him opens them up to interview others.
‘Class Organizaton’ and ‘Philly’ very rarely work in the same sentence..
Sandberg led the Cubs to the postseason twice in the 80s as a player and has been a very successful minor-league manager.
The Cubs, speaking of classless, refused to give him the reins a few years back even though the team stunk on ice and the Phils snapped him up. I hope he succeeds wildly in Philadelphia.
I hope he does great as well, but I’m a little biased.
I just don’t like the way the ending of Manuel went.
Prior to their world championship the Phillies this very very close to dumping him but the championship bought him a few more years. I gather the Phillies know that their window of opportunity is closing with the bunch they have their now so why not go in a new direction with a new manager.
Thanks raccoonradio.
Stay classy, Philly.
The chicago flubs are the text book definition of classless.
