The Phils are dead in the water. 15 1/2 games out and above only woeful Miami. Firing Manuel with six weeks to go in the season will change nothing. A bush league move.
A class organization would have let him finish the season and get his 100th. win. If only in appreciation for 2008.
“He’ll be replaced on an interim basis by Ryne Sandberg.”
Hopefully we’ll get some of that Cubs magic...
Seems like odd timing. This year is a wash. I don’t kow why they wouldn’t just let him go after the season. Guys like Charlie deserve a dignified exit. Something must have gone down that led to this now. Especially with an honorary event this weekend.
The teams stars are aging so they will probably go in a different direction and start off with a new manager. No more Walter Alston’s in this day and age. A team makes a run then cleans house. Walter Alston managed the Dodgers for 23 years on a one year contract.
Prior to their world championship the Phillies this very very close to dumping him but the championship bought him a few more years. I gather the Phillies know that their window of opportunity is closing with the bunch they have their now so why not go in a new direction with a new manager.
Stay classy, Philly.
