We've decided to take a weekly look at a word or phrase that's caught our attention, whether for its history, usage, etymology or just because it has an interesting story.
NOTE TO READERS: This is a post about one of the harshest racial slurs in American English. In the interest of forthrightness, we're going to use the slur throughout this essay. In other words, you'll see "nigger" used throughout the essay. We understand that the word is upsetting, so we wanted to offer people a chance to opt out now
You can set your watch to it. Every few months, some person of note gets in trouble for saying nigger. This summer's been especially busy: In the last eight weeks, we've had controversies involving former NFL player Hugh Douglas, current NFL player Riley Cooper, Trayvon Martin's friend Rachel Jeantel, the comedian Tim Allen and disgraced TV food personality Paula Deen.
After each incident, after the perfunctory opprobrium is directed at the person who initially used the word, comes the invariable call for everyone — particularly in hip-hop — to stop using the word nigger. But I always wonder, given its widespread use (and the myriad ways in which people use it): How would stamping it out even work?

I would put in on back of a Jackass and ride the jackass to D.C. Once there the mentally ill running government could dance around the ass chanting mumbo jumbo until the N word gets sucked up into the atmosphere.
If that doesn't' work, just pass a law making it's use by Caucasians, a felony.
I would encourage everyone to use it as much as possible until it no longer mattered anymore than any other slur. But I won’t bite on using it here, I already was on probation for using the c word as a substitute.
catchy tune http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQpmJgZZ2gQ
Usage of the word was dying and it was no longer used by decent people. But it got resurrected. I understand that some of it is to take the sting out of the word but it’s gone too far. Most speech is vulgar now anyway. They might as well ask how to stop people from using the F word.
"Why you lousy Mick!"
"Aye, that I am."
"Did you hear me, you Pogue, I called you a Mick?"
"Indeed, I am a pogue, and paddy, a mick...now that we've gotten past the formalities was there something you wanted to say to me?"
Kel Tech PF9. Proven.
It wouldn't get rid of the N-word, but it would accomplish what the N-words' ultimate goal is.
I am assuming they mean the word, “Nigger”. Yes, that’s the word. For starts they can ban RAP music.
I know it’s a crummy word, but it’s JUST A WORD!!!!
WHY is it the WORST possible offense in our culture for it having been said???
People can kidnap, rape, slaughter... yes, bad people, but we try to “understand” what made them do it. They get swarmed by psychologists...
Say the “N” word and you need to pull a Snowden and leave the country.
~~gasp~~
Refuse to be called white in any form or format.
Instruct any who use that ‘w’ word they are bigoted and racist. I am an american. no prefix no hyphen
If needed use the term ‘W’ word. Just as we use the term ‘N’ word.
Equality is a two edged sword.
They ought to take a critical look at In-N-Out Burger
Exactly. The F word offends me far greater than any N word.
Its all Hate Speech anyway. Using that language only serves to spread hatred, ignorance and anger.

James 3
New International Version (NIV)
Taming the Tongue
3 Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2 We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.
3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of ones life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in Gods likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
Detroit NAACP to Hold Symbolic Funeral for 'N' Word Published April 30, 2007 Associated Press The NAACP held a symbolic funeral in Detroit 63 years ago for Jim Crow. The civil rights organization will do the same this summer for the "N" word, the Rev. Wendell Anthony said Sunday. The announcement by Anthony, president of the civil rights organization's Detroit branch, came shortly before the start of the annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner. He said members and supporters of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will conduct services and a "eulogy" for the racial slur....
"We are committed to ending hate word and talk," he said. "It doesn't do anyone any good, whether it's a journalist on TV or a rapper on the radio. "Now that corporate America has caught up, maybe something will happen. We have to stop investing in stuff that is killing us."
How Would You Kill The N-Word?
Replacing ‘it’ with ‘the N-word’ only reminds people who use the latter of the the former.
Like it or not, ‘it’ is a word that entered the vocabulary a long time ago. It will remain as long a people use it.
So, the real question should be: Who is keeping it alive?
"Trayvon Martin's friend Rachel Jeantel, the comedian Tim Allen and disgraced TV food personality Paula Deen."Disgraced? Typical NPR blather.
