FULL TITLE: Autism breakthrough as 'genetic signature' in babies as young as a year found; blood test in the works
A GENETIC "signature" of autism in babies as young as 12 months has been identified for the first time, an international conference is to be told.
A simple blood test is now being developed and may be available in one to two years, Professor Eric Courchesne will tell the Asia Pacific Autism conference in Adelaide today.
"This discovery really changes the landscape of our understanding of causes and effective treatments," says the director of the Autism Centre of Excellence at the University of California in San Diego.
"This is going to lead to much better treatments at a much earlier stage and a large percentage of children having an excellent outcome."
He said the several gene networks that are a common thread in autism have been identified for the first time.
"During the fourth, fifth and sixth months of pregnancy, they disrupt the production of brain cells, producing too many or in some cases too few, and how the cells are organised and connected," he said.

Aspartame was approved in 1981....
It’s probably epigenetic.
There must have been some awareness of autism in the 50s, because there was an Elvis movie, with Mary Tyler Moore, I think, where Elvis was a doctor and MTM was a nun and there was an autistic little girl who was one of Elvis’ patients.
There were certainly some who today would be diagnosed as ‘on the spectrum’. That is, awkward and socially inept. But autism was both only an extreme diagnosis and very rare.
no doubt-—and corn syrup is put into everything-—and wireless.....it is overload.
I grew up in the 50s and 60s. I dont recall any of the kids in any of my classes having autism.
Does anyone?
UFO abductions started after that time period and autism rates skyrocketed, coincidence????
Just kidding, or am I?
You are talking about normal anti-social qualities-—which are because of environments/habituation.
You can tell the difference with neuron damage-—it is more like mercury poisoning-—much more than just “odd” behavior—abnormal brain/movements.
Socially backward parents will model that behavior to their children and children will copy it.
It is dangerous when corporations/schools make billions off of abnormal kids and vaccines/pills. They have started drugging millions of boys-—who were like Einstein/Edison/Mark Twain who were bored in schools——why put toxins in kids—when you don’t even understand the effects of psychotrophic drugs-—but understand they create Kip Kinkles and Adam Lanzas and the Columbine kids.
All of a sudden we need to “medicate” little kids (insanity and evil)-—50 years ago that would NOT have been allowed-—it would have been seen for the evil that it is.
I suffered from being self conscious and shy in school. Was given derisive looks by the popular kids at times and the other half seemingly invisible. Picked last for gym teams, unless it was my best friend choosing, that wonderful stocky-built girl with the Mohawk and kind, accepting nature. I remember my own mother fighting with me in my bedroom when I was 6 years old, at one point pulling my hair, to make me go out and talk to the girl down the block that had come calling. Guess she didn’t understand I wasnt in the mood to play with the girl after her sister accused me of “Pushing” her when we were skipping down the sidewalk and she fell and busted her chin a bit. I thought I was just “shy always heard that word from family. But after having come across this word Aspergers and read up on it I’m convinced I probably have it.
I have 2 heart conditions that were only “discovered” in the last 10-20 years. Does that mean that no one had it before, no, it means they didn’t know what to call it and many people were told that they were crazy for not feeling well most of the time....
Also, I grew up in the 70’s and know of at least one person that had autism. Most kids were put in special ed or special schools so they wouldn’t be in regular classrooms anyway. As kids we wouldn’t have been aware of “special” kids for the most part....
>> Does anyone?
Nope.
I was forced to deal with it and learn awareness and control - turned out to be one of those folks who maintained a 4.0 in college with a minimum of studying. Still can't focus on anything long enough to develop a real avocation, but I can get along in society and earn my own way.
I am a bit introverted and prefer to deal on a cerebral level vs. emotionally - hence the hanging around FR since shortly after 9/11. I've been aware of this for a few decades but this is the first I considered it as being tied to the other "issues".
Structure starts in the home first and foremost, if a child is never taught to sit still they have a hard time having to do it in school. This goes for girls as well as boys.
Like every one else only case of a lingering illness was a Polio case in HS.
Did not start seeing any ADD and such until my own kids hit school age. getting a label on a kid gets the school more money.
The book did not disprove genetic theory. It explored social interaction and behavioral conditioning and its effects on mental illness and published in the mid 60’s.
Did you read the book? By demonstrating that autism is the result of faulty familial communication, the book decimated the genetic theory.
Finding a correlation between behavior and an affliction doesn’t disprove other possible contributing factors, it only proves, should the research be repeatedly testable and duplicated, that a behavioral component exists.
I had forgotten all about polio. Remember when I was small my mom took me to the hospital to see someone who was in an iron lung. Long time ago and it was a scary illness.
Kids today get so many more vaccinations beginning when they are quite young than my kiddos had. Have often wondered how much the introduction of who knows what into their bodies contributes to these issues.
I agree structure has to start in the home. I would suspect that most families no longer all even sit down together for breakfast and dinner. This is a great forum to talk about manners and behaving, particularly if it starts off with a prayer of thanks.
Back in the 60s kids with autism were usually called retarded and were put away institutions. Dr. Temple Grandin was diagnosed with autism in 1949. Luckily for her, her parents were rich and her mother fought until she found knowledgeable doctors was able to send her to a boarding school that specialized in autistic and other mental issues. The time she spent in public schools up until that point were nightmarish. The other kids either tormented her or ignored her.
