From 1963 to 1978, Steve McQueen was considered by movie fans and 'big screen' insiders as one of the main leading actors in Hollywood. The rugged faced actor's roles defined "cool" and his persona was idolized by men and women alike. But he wasn't blinded by Hollywood's glitter. Late in his life the famous actor finally realized his need for God's love and decided to commit his life to Christ.

Yes it is. I remember a documentary about him that was aired on PBS. Steve stated that acting was a job to him and that it allowed him to do the things he wanted in life.

For him it was not Hollywood Parties, though sometimes he would attend one. It was Family and Himself.

Today’s actors may try to dress or act “cool” but they can not ever be Steve. I think Steve’s persona on film as this tough guy probably was a result of his upbringing which was built up in him. Yes he was abdandon by his parents and I believe he lived with his grandparents for a while. He did stay in orphanages or a boy center. That is why once he was a box office star he could demand anything. Unlike today’s “Stars” they always want something for themselves, not Steve he wanted things in bulk like Jeans, etc. so he can donate them to a boy school especially the one he stayed in. He never forgotten his background.

His conversion to Christ was due in part to the influences of his flying instructor, Sammy Mason, Mason’s son Pete, and Barbara. McQueen attended his local church, Ventura Missionary Church. Now this part i heard and cannot be verified, but I read somewhere that Billy Graham visited him shortly before he died, but again can not be verified.

To add to the confusion, Newman served in WWII, but became a pinko leftist.

McQueen never compromised.

But they BOTH did a LOT for charity.

from IMBD

The “King of Cool” became a born-again Christian shortly before he died, due to the influence of his third wife Barbara Minty and his flying instructor Sammy Mason. He went through bible studies with the Reverend Billy Graham. It is interesting to note that this conversion happened before he was diagnosed with cancer, meaning it was probably genuine.

McQueen’s favorite Bible verse was John 3:16 which reads, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life”. That verse is written in the original King James Version Holy Bible.

That link in 33 talks about that.

Le Mans is on TCM at 3PM Pacific today. I have it on disc but have the DVR set to record it anyway. It's double feature night with Papillon at 9PM.

I love the Gulf Porsche and the Ferrari 512 head to head

Yesterday, TMC ran Ramon Novarro silents round the clock. It was a classic movie lover's dream.

Included was "Ben Hur" with the great chariot race duel between Novarro and Francis X Bushman. I wished I could have stayed up all day and all night for the parade of Novarro films including "The Pagan" and "The Student Prince of Heidelberg".

He was an excellent actor who died a horrible death.

He made a movie with Jackie Gleason called “Solider in the rain” that was pretty good but hardly seen anymore.
