A $438 million deal for the company was announced last week.
The offer, which came from the private equity firm Kohlberg & Company, would take Steinway private. It has been traded in the NY Stock Exchange under the stock symbol LVB, for Ludwig van Beethoven, since Steinway went public in 1996.

Around 1946, my father bought a 1915 Steinway parlor grand piano. I don’t know how he was able to afford it on a sailor’s salary, but it stayed in the family for 60 years and is still being used at a local church.
