Massive solar flare narrowly misses Earth, EMP disaster barely avoided
Washington Examiner ^ | 7/31/13 | PAUL BEDARD

Two EMP experts told Secrets that the EMP flashed through earth's typical orbit around the sun about two weeks before the planet got there.

"The world escaped an EMP catastrophe," said Henry Cooper, who lead strategic arms negotiations with the Soviet Union under President Reagan, and who now heads High Frontier, a group pushing for missile defense.

"There had been a near-miss about two weeks ago, a Carrington-class coronal mass ejection crossed the orbit of the Earth and basically just missed us," said Peter Vincent Pry, who served on the Congressional EMP Threat Commission from 2001-2008. He was referring to the 1859 EMP named after astronomer Richard Carrington that melted telegraph lines in Europe and North America.

And if that scenario happens, we here in the US had better prepare to be down for a long time. Just because we’ve rescued other countries from various things in the past, does not mean any country, including Canada, will necessarily have the capability to rescue all 315 million of us from such devastation.

Just finished re-reading it two nights ago. A good read.

If we’re not prepared with our electrical grid, a Carrington-level event could cause our country’s population to dwindle from 312 million to 31 million. #starvation #hypothermia #animalattacks #barbarians #disease #dehydration

My Mom’s 1991 Mercury Sable suddenly looks like a prepper asset. Kept indoors for two decades, very low mileage, simple systems, runs great & probably somewhat EMP resistant.

My wife’s SRX has all the latest bells & whistles and thinks it’s smarter than me though that’s no great achievement.

We are too chip dependent. Way too dependent on chips. Mom said her new microwave oven was driving her crazy with all the programming menus, boop-boop-boop, etc. I spruced up the original 1976 Sharp microwave that was a wedding gift to us & gave it back (wife & I have a brand new kitchen). Mom is ecstatic; the Sharp has a power setting lever, a mechanical timer, and that’s it. Works like a champ.

Unforunately, the lack of centralization could mean higher electrical prices, due to a lack of economy of scale. As long as we’re having half our paychecks taken away from us by government, they might as well make themselves useful and harden the existing grid.

Not really. I don’t exactly hold humanity in high esteem either.

An Edsel plays an important role in the book I referenced in #20, above.

Any car will die if it had a transistorized ignition and the EMP was very powerful. That means back to the early 60’s.

On the flip side, most systems can be shielded. It’s just not financially sound for manufacturers to produce vehicles like that currently.

If there is a EMP pulse, I am confident most of my hardware and systems and vehicles will be fine for the most part, maybe something like a 40% loss in system availability, while I manually diagnose all the random failures.

I also have a several generators. Not running, they will still have a induced voltage, but more than likely, the voltage rises won’t be great enough to damage their already voltage spiked protected systems. I seriously doubt in the worst case, that the coils themselves will be melted. It will simply be a matter of conjuring up the silicon parts in the various regulator components, etc.

I would also say the older cars are the most venerable. While modern cars are no heavily shielded, the computers and ignition active components are already lightly shielded to keep their electronic noise inside the box...

I gotta ask: Has Anyone Done Homework On Which Vehicles Would Be Hardened Against EMP?

“an “electromagnetic pulse” so big that it could have knocked out power, cars and iPhones throughout the United States.”

No......

Not to minimize a solar flares impact, but, a solar flare can impact the power grid only. It will not directly impact iPhones and cars.

It is not a “High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse” such as a nuclear explosion high in the atmosphere - which can impact electronics.

"Pics, or it didn’t happen."

Yep...it's common knowledge that everything "they" say happened before about 1840 never actually happened. The American War for Independence? Never happened...no pictures. The French Revolution? Never happened...no pictures. Same goes for the War of 1812...no pics = never happened. And we know pictures never lie, right? /sarc
