Kate Middleton in early stages of labor, admitted to hospital
In the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth Realms, it is the ultimate defence against an elected government deciding to act despotically.
It's the final check and balance that ensures stability by allowing a government that acts illegally or unconstitutionally can be removed from office.
Because it exists, it is rarely needed - but twice in the twentieth century, in Australia in 1931 and 1975, the Crown removed a government from office when it tried to exceed its legal authority. And it was done peacefully and smoothly. And order prevailed.
Yes, part of monarchy is purely symbolism - but that's not all it is.
I've sworn oath to the Queen - both as a symbol, and as ultimate constitutional authority in the two countries I am a citizen of. Both things matter.
I should also say that I am fortunate enough to be friends with a couple of members of the Royal family, and was also involved in the political effort that helped ensure Australia remained a constitutional monarchy in 1999. I’ve seen this from a lot of different angles, in both its symbolic and real sense.
What does uncle have to do with it? She would have been in line after her brother.
Yes, once William has a child, Harry is bumped down the succession.
While the British news outlets are consumed with the royal birth, how will we learn updates regarding U.S. Federal Government scandals?
Anybody notice that for about a week they were saying the Duchess would be admitted by Saturday because they were expecting her to go into labor....even though the science can’t predict the exact day such an event would take place. The end of the week comes and boom she goes into labor! Call me skeptical!
My guess: A planned induction! They’ll have to cancel all the betting if certain royals or their “persons in waiting” had placed bets and were in the know all along!
Chit chat?? It’s Frontpage news
Happy birthday TC!
My favorite tidbit on this..The ob/gyn who will deliver the heir was scheduled to retire last year. He postponed his retirement once Kate became preggers. He also announced that he was “giving up drinking” until after the birth.
If theyre going to have a monarchy, they should do it right, which means following primogeniture.
If you’re going to choose a monarch you should go back to the classic method of determination.
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is the best basis for a system of government.
You should claim supreme power just ‘cause some watery tart throws a sword at you!
Thank you! Will and Kate can name their baby Tax-chick ;-).
Victoria Elizabeth Diana Ann
Charles William Phillip George
God Bless Princess Kate!
Sounds good to me. Unless it is a boy. Then I think he would get teased a lot.
I don’t care about ‘royalty’!
Other way around. Victoria was ahead of Ernie Gus in the primogeniture line of succession, but she was bypassed as monarch of Hannover, which used Salic Law, so no Queens Regnant.
Well, yes. I think it’s a girl, though.
I hate to point this out to y’all because it might flame the feminist meme, but of all the monarchies left in Europe and Scandinavia, most will be headed by females in the next generation...
Sweden, The Netherlands, Spain, (I think) Belgium, Norway....
Sorry boys but it looks like Girl Power will reign!!!
Consider the president of the United States, for example.
At least Russia and Israel have men as head of government!
