Phil Mickelson won the Scottish Open on Sunday with a final-round 3-under-par 69 plus a playoff hole with South African Branden Grace. Mickelson held off Grace by one at Inverness, Scotland after he birdied the first playoff hole and Grace parred it.
Lefty made it more difficult than it needed to be, though. When needing a par on the 72nd hole, he did his best Phil Mickelson impression and three-putted from 20 feet for bogey to put himself into the playoff with Grace, who had already finished.
Mickelson then nearly holed out his third shot (a wedge) on the 607-yard, par-5 playoff hole. He tapped in for an easy birdie, and Grace missed his long birdie. Here's a look at the chip:

Pictures of lefties mess me up.
Good for him. Nice guy. Nice family. Keeps golf classy!!
He should have 2 putted the 18th in regulation play.
He played the approach correctly, by playing conservative and taking 3 shots to the green. He only needed a par to win the tournament. Then during putting, instincts took over and he tried to hole the 1st putt and slid 4 or 5 feet by on those rock hard Scottish greens. If he hits to die the putt near the hole, he would’nt have to end up in a sudden death playoff.
Nice to see a real gentleman win. The anti-Tiger.
I hear you on the leftie thing. :-)
He is certainly one that does keep classy.
Lets hope it carries over to Muirfield next week. Should be interesting to see Faldo and Tom Watson in the field. Tough golf course. Other than maybe Carnoustie, the hardest I played when I was over there back in the day.
Yeah, yeah. But he gave his fans something extra to cheer about. Phil is anything but conventional or conservative in his approach to golf. He does have a habit of shooting himself in the foot on occasion. But he remains far and away the #1 golfer - at least to my family.
“Pictures of lefties mess me up.”
Hey, knock it off. We lefties are vastly more intelligent than the rest of the human race. We have to be as we always have to do everything backwards from you all. Even flushing the toilet is a challenge. Can’t hold cards in our hands as they don’t fan out right. Can’t write without covering up our own words. We have unique challenges to face. However, I will have you know, there are a disproportionate amount of U.S. Presidents that are lefties, ... so there.
He may be Rush Limbaugh's hero, but I'm always rooting for Eldrick Woods to lose.
That's what mirrors are for. Mickelson does everything else right handed.
Yes. Including the current one. Your point again??? ;-)
good for Phil
glad to see this win for him after he missed the cut at the Greenbrier classic
Tidbit from Time OnLine:
“Barack Obama is the latest to join a long list of left-handed presidents from the 20th century: James Garfield, Herbert Hoover, Henry Truman, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton were all southpaws.
What makes lefties so electable? Some experts think left-handed people have a greater aptitude for language skills, which may help them craft the rhetoric necessary for political office.”
Note: Ronald Reagan was a southpaw. So there Plus note the second paragraph regarding our language skills, so watch out, I can talk circles around you. :-)
GOOD ON YOU PHIL!
I like everything about this guy. He's a great ambassador for the game, His long term relationship with his sponsors says a lot about his character.
The same goes for his commitment to his wife and family.
Heck, he's only had one caddy in his entire 21 year career.
It's no surprise to learn that he's a solid conservative.
I am wondering if that is his first ever victory over there in Ireland/Scotland/England.
Good post, Baynative. Thanks!
Greatness is as greatness does. And Phil does it right.
