Name the BEST and the WORST (in your opinion) of the Rush Limbaugh guest hosts when he is absent from the EIB airwaves. Here is my humble opinion:
The BEST guest host is Mark Steyn who substituted for El Rushbo yesterday. Usually I miss listening to Rush but Steyn is so good that he actually makes for an enjoyable break. His wit and polished accent makes for good listening.
The WORST guest host had to be Bill Cunningham. Thankfully, I think I only heard him once and that was one time too many. Cunningham's delivery throughout the show was like one long LOUD screech. Painful on the ears and it actually started to give me a headache.
I also remember another guest host whose name is thankfully forgotten who spent a big chunk of the show ignoring current events in favor of playing silly number (or word) games on the air but Cunningham stands out in memory as truly annoying.
The one time Karl (Tokyo) Rove) hosted was like getting a root-canal.
I heard Matthews sub
when I was in college. Around 1989...
Seems I've heard/read somewhere that once a host gets nationally syndicated Rush can't use them anymore. I don't know if it's a contractual requirement or what.
Hedgecock is very unlikable and difficult to listen to, IMHO.
... Michael Medved, Mike Rosen, Matt Drudge, Jed Babbin, Bill Handle ...
I agree - too many jokes with Steyn.
Walter Williams is the best guest host, hands down.
My all time favorites:
1. Dr. Thomas Sowell
2. Mark Stein
3. Dr. Walter Williams
I don’t recall listening to any guest host as being bad but I don’t recall hearing Matthews or Rove.
Unfortunately, most Americans will die never hearing Thomas Sowell’s view of this country but I deeply appreciate Rush giving him an opportunity to introduce himself to millions of listeners years ago.
Judge Ellen Morphonios...
I believe tony snow was a sub host.
These days, if it is not rush I am not tuning in.
As far as I know, WMAL’s Chris Plante has never subbed for Rush, but he should.
Mark Steyn Best
Mark Davis - “click” (off). ..loves the sound of his own voice like O’Reiley
I get a lot done when maestro Rush is away.
Steyn is overrated. After one hour, his voice and accent grate on my ears.
Plus, though I appreciate well-done wit and satire, three hours of Steyn's trying endlessly to wrap his particular brand of humor and irony around almost every topic is about two hours too much for me.
I vaguely remember Michael Reagan doing a surprisingly good job a couple of times many years ago.... one reason he was good, of course, was because his first name isn't Mark.

“Mark Davis is the worst.”
I think when he was spotting for Rush he would have a case of stage fright. He’s tried his hand at tv some and doesn’t do well with it either. However, this is true of many who are good on radio but not so good on tv.
Personally, I wish Rush would use some of the conservative gals as fill in’s. we’ve got a bunch of really good ones.
To this day I believe he lost a bet with someone (Ailes?, Snerdley?) and that was his payment. There is no other logical reason nor excuse for that abuse of the audience.
I am a fan of Walter Williams and Mark Steyn, but my favorite all-time guest host was B-1 Bob. America was certainly on the downgrade by that time, but things didn’t seem as dire. Unchecked government snooping, 9-11 and economic collapse were in the future and we didn’t have an America-hating Muslim-sympathizing Marxist radical of unknown origins in the White House. Rush’s show was generally more fun in those days. I loved all those update themes, particularly the one making fun of Ted Kennedy’s drunken philandering ways.. B-1 was, for me at least, an extension of the fun. He is a terrific storyteller. He would come in and tell captivating stories and go on epic rants aimed at baby-killing feminists, Tom Foley, the Clintons, and the effete Vietnam vet John Kerry, among others. I used to always enjoy his special orders in the House, too. B-1 really loves this country and he’s a man of principal. When he fought for something he did it with passion and vigor. All of that came though when he manned the E.I.B. mic.
Since I was only exposed to Dornan in small doses, I’m sure there is much I don’t know (and there is no telling what I’ve forgotten). Maybe the man was part blow-hard, I don’t know. I do know our side was better when his was one of the voices that was being heard.
Rush should do what Johnny Carson did and have a guest host once each week
He deserves the break, he’s more tan earned it
And mark steyn would be a great substitute, much like Jay Lena was to Carson.
I feel smarter just listening to Mark Steyn.
I agree:
William/Steyn both intelligent, informed, and quick with the wit that keeps me smiling even in these the worst of times.
best = Mark steyn, he can run his own show and give Rush a run for the money
Mark Belling and the other Mark are the worst, almost as bad as chris matthews
Doug Urbanski, best fill-in host ever.
Hissy Chrissy was a guest once...once.
