UPDATED: Universal's 3D animated event pic grosses $4.7 million, compared to $2 million for Disney's big-budget action-adventure.
Universal's Despicable Me 2 left The Lone Ranger in the dust on Tuesday night as both films opened at the North American box office on the eve of the long July 4th holiday stretch.
The 3D animated event pic grossed a stellar $4.7 million from 2,563 theaters, while Disney's big-gamble Western -- headlining Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer -- took in $2 million.

I’m still trying to find out where Costner got that 9 shot Colt.

Bullet counting in westerns is one of my hobbies. The gunfight at the OK corral in Tombstone was a doozy too.
To: Tijeras_Slim
Yeah, I do the same...in ALL movies.

I’m waiting for a big screen version of “Psycho Dad.”
To: Puppage
Try “Where Eagles Dare” sometime. Clint and Burton must have had stick mags about 13 feet long in those MP40’s.

The movies really can appeal to persons of all ages. They’re positive and have some humor that isn’t dirty, but only adults get the underlying meaning.

If you haven’t seen it, “Broken Trail” is great, too. Duvall plays pretty much the same character...an older Gus McCrae. :)

There is nothing worse than the CGI karate fight, 30 feet in the air.

I loved Broken Trail too, but Duvall’s character was too held-back to be Gus McCrae. McCrae would have kicked everybody’s ass on his own.

Lets see... Johnny Depp playing a phony indian while channeling the pirate Jack Sparrow with a DEAD BIRD on his head (which screams: "Forget that man in the mask... LOOK AT ME!" every time he is on screen. Talk about upstaging the supposed star of the film.) throughout the whole movie or Gru and his wonderfully charming "Minions" and adopted daughters getting into all kinds of mischief.
Which would you take your family to see?
I'll take Despicable Me 2 for $1,000 Alex.
