CONCORD -- Two Concord roommates are seeking an explanation as to why a police officer shot their aging cocker spaniel during a neighborhood search for a suspicious person last week.
Zach Grimm and Dave Biller say Kirby, a 13-year-old cocker spaniel, is recovering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder after barking at an officer in the backyard of their home in the 2000 block of Weaver Court on June 17.
But a week after the incident, the two say they have received no explanation from police about why officers were in their yard. Worse, they said, they have not received an apology from the department.
"It's obviously pretty upsetting," said Grimm, 29, who said the dog has been in his family for about 10 years. "The officer who shot at him, after it was over he just sort of had this goofy look on his face, almost like a smirk, and then he left. No explanation, no apology or anything."
Police were in the area around 4:30 p.m. after reports that a person posing as a door-to-door salesman was looking into backyards, according to Concord police Lt. Bill Roche said. In the course of the search, officers entered the backyard of the residence and were confronted by the 29-pound, reddish-brown dog.

If the men wanted some attention, they should have claimed Kirby was gay and in the country illegally.
Another scumbag hiding behind a badge....
If that was my dog, the cop wouldn’t be smirking after losing a knee.
So let’s review. Cop looking for suspect hiding from the police, looks into a back yard and sees it is protected by a dog, a dog so “fierce” that the cop feels compelled to shoot it. Did it ever dawn on the cop that the suspect would not be there because of the dog?

....And some Freepers will defend even this in 3...2...1....
Kinda long for a sign. ;) :)
and in the Lib, Peta haven of the MOST compassionate voters......CALIFORNIA!
The cop wasn’t afraid of the dog.
The cop *liked shooting* the dog.
A cop which *likes* to shoot dogs will almost certainly one day turn his itchy trigger finger on his fellow man.
My grandmother used to raise cocker spaniels and I never knew a mean one.
You should train The Boy to bark that phrase. :)
Ok...did the cop give the dog a warning...?
..or the writer is a complete moron?
Just how threatening can a 13 year old 29 lb cocker spaniel be?
That would take a higher level of critical thinking skills most cops cannot fathom...
As the mother to a thirteen year old special needs son who is nearly six feet tall and still has temper tantrums like a four year old, I shudder to think what might have happened had that cop stumbled across him in a backyard instead of the spaniel....
Can any animal be more docile than a 13-year-od Cocker Spaniel? Maybe this one was a grouch.
hey “holster sniffer..” you might want to weigh in on this one.
Killer dog.
Hey,thanks a lot for pinging me.I think it's unfortunate that the cops didn't use a hand grenade...on the dog and the parakeet as well.
Anecdotal story, but true:
My neighbor’s apartment and mine share a staircase.
She had to call the police about a child that had come to her door saying she was “lost”.
I didn’t know this, and was taking MY dog out for a walk on a leash.
I saw the LEO coming up the stairs (in full battle regalia) and my FIRST instinct was to put myself between the cop and my dog. I did it without even thinking. Then I “Good Morning, can I help you?” And he said “Other Apartment”
OK. So I went on my way. Shielding the Dog the whole time.
sad.
“Where are the boundaries between being yourself and being alarming?”
It is exactly why the ruling on the 15th amendment got so bollixed up as they used the phrase “Appropriate Legislation” which any dishonest ruling elite could fly a 747 through.
Lawyers are the communist’s greatest tool in implementing the communist manifesto. They are highly trained to deceive and the better they can deceive the higher up they will go in the law, politics, and the judicial bench.
The title is ambiguous. I had to read the first part of the article to be assured that it was the spaniel, not the owners, that was shot.
They don’t care about community support or perceived authority. The too often see themselves as occupying forces in a hostile population and the only support they desire comes from above in the war against the citizenry.
