Local man seeks truth in Flight 800 crash

New information earlier this week pointing to a cover-up in the crash of TWA Flight 800 doesn't come as a surprise to at least one local man whose daughter was killed in the 1996 tragedy.

Donald Nibert, a retired Penn College forestry professor, said from the beginning all he has wanted is the truth from investigators.

"I've always felt this was friendly fire from day one," he said.

The crash off Long Island claimed the life of his daughter, Cheryl, along with 15 other Montoursville Area High School students and their five adult chaperones.

A film to be released next month makes the claim that the official government report on the crash was an elaborate fabrication. Six experts from the National Transportation Safety Board investigation team who originally concluded the crash was an accident now say they were silenced by superiors.

Seventeen years have gone by since the crash, but Nibert hasn't forgotten.

Early on, he was dogged in his pursuit of the truth.

He queried NTSB officials.

Eventually, he managed to secure a copy of the flight-data recorder from the plane.

One expert concluded that 2 seconds of the recording were deleted.

And Glen Schulze, of Littleton, Colo., a flight data recorder expert maintains to this day that the device was, in his works, "doctored" with 4 seconds of the recording missing.

"What I believe at this point is that it (plane) was not an internal explosion. It was external," Schulze told the Sun-Gazette Thursday. "That's what most of witnesses saw."

Such developments have only confirmed Nibert's suspicions.

About a year after the crash, Nibert recalled receiving an anonymous call from a woman who claimed that her relative was responsible for shooting down the plane from a submarine.

He can't say what she told him is true. Then again, he can't be sure.

Witnesses he's talked to have seemed to confirm his conclusions: that friendly fire brought down the plane.

The final NTSB report claimed faulty wiring in a central fuel tank caused a blast that destroyed the fuselage.

Nibert doesn't buy it.

What he really wants, he said, is for the truth to come out and for those engaged in what he believes has been a lie to be prosecuted.

"I want the truth. That is what I've always wanted," he said. "They have covered up things for 17 years."

Schulze, for his part, said he stands by his original statements that NSTB officials have been anything but forthcoming about their investigation.

He said he never has tried to figure out what the motives may have been behind those responsible for the crash itself.

Nibert has been the lone voice among the relatives of Montoursville victims in expressing his anger at the government.

"I have to say I felt ostracized for my thoughts," he said. "Parents don't want to consider this possibility, which is understandable."

The tragedy, he said, always will be with him.

The filmmakers of "TWA Flight 800" are asking for the NTSB to re-open the investigation.

Nibert, for his part, said he's not holding out a lot of hope that it will happen.

And the memory of his daughter - he's managed to keep alive.

"It's difficult walking into her room, which we never changed," he said.

I have felt for the past 10-15 years that TWA800 was brought down by 2 ManPads, one launched for close in shore, or from land, and another about 4 miles out to sea.

They bracketed the plane with 2 SAMS to greatly increase the odds of a shoot down.

The witness statements generally back that up.

I remember clearly a little boy being interviewed. He stated he saw like a bright light shooting upward from a hillside. He turned to his mother to tell her “Mom! Look someone is shooting fireworks”. I immediately knew and felt this planed was downed and I would not be surprised if it was by some Ragheads.

The only other thing I’ll say is this. Imagine if it was YOUR daughter that was blown up on that flight.

Someone randomly calls you and mentions a submarine missile after the fact. You don’t consider it? You don’t mention it? Sure - it could be a complete hoax. But it’s your DAUGHTER.

Easy to criticize from the sidelines when you have no real skin in the game.

If a hunk of rock or two traveling 25,000 to 160,000 KPH, weighing maybe half a kilo, hit the plane outside it'd been severely damaged.

There was a meteor shower that evening, and the plane was taking off into the first minutes of our contact with the debris field where you find the biggest chunks.

BTW, the rocks would have been coming over the horizon and would have looked like missiles.

Flight 800 occurred on July 17, 1996 ~ the SOUTH DELTA AQUARIDS, with medium speed meteorites, began mid-July and ended mid-August. There are two streams of debris in this field made up of at least 2 disintegrated comets.

I suspect the examiners were under intense pressure from the aircraft manufacturers to come up with anything but the conclusion that a meteorite had taken out a large airplane.

Quick compuation revealed the missile had an initial takeoff blast zone in excess of 2 miles ~ the launching sub would have to be of immense size.

Later on it was shown to be a scheduled airplane coming over the horizon on its way to landing in California. NUMEROUS photos identical to the CBS concoction were located showing the same phenomenon.

It was an MSM hoax achieved through clever editing of the original video.

I remember on 9/11 George Stephanotises (or however you spell it) was being interviewed. The interviewer was asking what was going on at the White House. George said “After the bombing on TWA 800 we met in the situation room” or something close to that.

Hor Hay Stuf’n Envelopes said a lot of things. I wouldn’t consider him an authority on astronomical phenomenon or airplanes beyond finding the head.

Indeed.

While this happened in Long Island Sound not far from Electric Boat and the Naval Submarine base, this is not the kind of weapon they would have.

I remember waking that morning finding out about the incident, shocked that it wasn’t far from me and my work there at EB. Never thought about a sub.

I did hear about a surface ship being in the area, maybe a cruiser or the sort. Much more likely to have that kind of weapon.

Subs are either attack - shooting torpedoes through water, basically - or ballistic - shooting gigantic nuclear missiles straight up, meant to traverse a hyperbola and “bomb” land, not aim at an air object. Possible to have a “test”, but still be weird to be that close to home and awfully coincidental it would hit an aircraft.

There is the possibility it was an accident - noone took responsibility for this, and you know Moslems LOVE to say they did it!

As to the appearance of being a rocket/missile going up, I saw a good show on this that somewhat put my fears to rest. Can’t remember which show it was, been a while and there are several disaster shows I love to watch, but basically it came down to the plane breaking apart then the bulk of the body lifting sharply upward in flame, appearing possibly straight up at some angles.

It was truly sad, either way. Lots of people may’ve been left alive in that horror of facing up to the sky (no cockpit) then falling down backward/etc.

There were victims with water in their lungs - meaning they technically drowned. They probably drowned after breaking every bone in their body once they hit the water.

I recall seeing a photo of a smokle plume /trail going up to the plane . As I recall , it was taken by a pilot of a plane flying in the vicinity who by happenstance ,had a camera in the cockpit .

There was no doubt about it as a plume /trail ; but unable to determine whether it was a trail going up , ..or down .
Mind you , that was a few years ago , but I am a visual type of person (but can’t seem to remember names for crap ).

Agreed about the meteorites looking like missles.
But the plume / trail would be horizontal or diagonal .
The photo which I saw was definitely verticle .

There have been two other spontaneous explosions of center fuel tanks in aviation history: Philippine Air Flight 143 in 1990 (four years before Ramzi Yousef planted a bomb above the fuel tank on the same airline), and a 2001 Thai Airways flight that was scheduled to be carrying Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra (who was hated by the sunni islamists in the south).

Draw your own conclusions.
