The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Mr. Sg once developed a motion-sensor sprinkler device. It would be even more fun if you rigged it w/green food coloring or indelible ink to dye the varmints!
I have some of those onions, but I would like to see the website, as I just happened upon the seeds one year and never got around to learning more about them. They are part of Hubby’s garden plot.
We actually have frozen zukes before for use in soups and zuke bread.
Did you have a lot of cold snaps last winter/early spring? It seems like when we do, we have fewer early insect problems, but since correlation isn’t causation....
LOL. I like that idea. Kinda like the dye packs used by banks.
Yes, I think we did have unusually cold weather this spring for a longer period of time than usual.
The back field (production gardens) remains a mess. For the first time in my memory, it looks like my tomatoes will be a disaster. The soil is oatmeal or playdough depending on elevation. Each time it dries enough to till properly, we get drenched.
Oh well.
I tilled one section this week and planted corn in the doughballs. Last night I planted bean among the corn just to get the job done. If they produce - good. If not, at least I tried. I primed both by pre-soaking the seed with a smidgen of kelp extract to get them going. Last night we had a good thunderstorm so more nitrogen and plenty of moisture to keep them going for a few more days.
We take what we get from the Lord. Prepared the fields (as best we can) and rely on God for the harvest (maybe somebody else grows it and sells it in the grocery store).
Still, all is well. We’re butchering chickens tomorrow, too.
I couldn't find the right type fertilizer for containers around here, so ordered some Jobes for containers plus a not big bag of fertilizer just for tomatoes when they start to grow tomatoes in that container.
If I find a source for the Fuseau strain, I’ll let you know. Walking onions? I could never have too many onions! If I were a vegetable, I would be a big, beautiful onion! (My personality is much more turnip, but who doesn’t want to aspire to greater things? Excelsior!)

We live in a rural area where electricity fails periodically. We haven't lost an entire freezer's worth of food yet, but I tend to gravitate toward dehydration and canning. The zukes reportedly turn into mush if you try to can them, I'm scared of losing them if I freeze them, so off I go to dehydrate.

Click on the link in 53. If you get some of those and I see they are totally cheap, you will never have to plant onions again, ever, in your whole life. Just don’t plant them where they will crowd out your regular garden.
Weather in Missouri is so unpredictable that we too sometimes have challenges. But I almost always grow a few things in those self watering pots.
When it rains too much the extra just runs out the watering hole. When it rains too little the plants get the amount of water they need from the water in the bottom of the container.
Course it’s not enough for canning and stuff, but it helps satisfy my desire for fresh salads that are pesticide free.LOL
Solid! Sort of like you treat mint (I adore mint and have never had it take over the garden). Will research if they can be planted in an oak half-barrel or a fabric bag or something.
Sounds good. I love blackberries: fresh, jelly, or canned. When I was a kid, we used to open a jar of home canned blackberries and juice, put a serving in a bowl, add a little heavy cream from the fresh milk, stir and eat it. It was a great treat anytime of the year.
I understand the concern. We have generators for when the electricity goes off, but our problem is the freezer itself.
Everynow and then it goes on the fritz, and the food often is thawed too much to refreeze before we discover it. Then we can whatever can be canned. Clean it out and start over.
It’s a relatively new freezer, and every time they check it out, they say it’s ok. I just think its got a computer glitch or temperature sensor that goes wacky or something.
Last time it happened, I just unplugged it, and decided to forget about it. We have a side by side upstairs, and a regular refrigerator down stairs with a top freezer. I just use those, and dehydrate or can more stuff.

If you put one of those Egyptian onions in a fabric grow bag and sat it on the ground, the onions would grow to the ground and root in that ground and keep going across the ground.
If you put the bag on a deck the onion would grow onto the deck but it couldn’t root there, so maybe the plant would stay that size since it couldn’t walk away and root however you wouldn’t have any more onions since it couldn’t walk and root.
The best place is it’s own area that it can’t get out of. Let’s say you plant it in your front yard - eventually your whole front yard would be onions.
