My company appears ready to move me to South Carolina, specifically to fill a position in our plant in North Charleston. I have a teenage son ready to finish up his last year in high school before heading off to college; our other children are grown and on their own, which I guess makes me and Mrs. RP empty-nesters.
I am coming from the St Louis region and know next to nothing about the Charleston area. I like to shoot, hunt, ride my Dyna Super Glide Custom, and play golf. Wife and I are life-long Catholics and enjoy participating with a strong congregation.
Any recommendations on areas to concentrate while looking for a new home? Summerville/Dorchester County looks promising but some real-world advice and observations from my Freeper Friends that live in the area would be most welcome.

It makes these life-long Midwesterners feel a little better about such a major change in our lives - particularly Mrs. RP, who is very nervous about leaving our substantial safety net of family & friends here in our current hometown (OK, me too).

Thanks particularly for the tip regarding Bishop England HS. Our children all went through Catholic education K-12 and we would prefer the youngest to complete his last year the same.
I feel your pain, we have to deal with the witch McCaskill here in MO. I still shake my head in disbelief over her re-election. An opportunity lost for our great state and the conservative cause in general.
Todd Akin is family friend and should have never lost because of a stupid manufactured controversy. It greatly saddened us to see such a fearless conservative so unfairly maligned.
Golf, Motorcycles? You’ll be moving to one of the best locations in the US.
Regarding the heat. Pooy. I think that coastal SC is just about the perfect climate in the CONUS. Especially if you live within 5 miles or so of the Ocean. We get a afternoon sea breaze here everyday and it cools the coast alot! I moved here largely due to the weather. I figure we get 10 - 15 days a year that are a little to hot. And 10 to 15 days a year that are too cold. To cold is defined a a frost delay in the morning for golf. We get a trace of snow every 6 years or so. Hi temp here today in Myrtle Beach is 83. Last 5 days... mid to high 80’s. Next five days. 80’s. Last summer we never hit 100 all summer.
We have a house in Summerville. I would look outside N. Charleston for a home. That area is becoming very ghetto-ized. I don’t even go there without a real reason. Summerville is a nice area but there are a lot of nice areas. There are lots of places to hunt and fish. Between Charleston and Orangeburg are a lot of forests and fresh water lakes. Don’t worry about what people tell you about the heat and humidity. After a few days your head will explode and you will adapt nicely after that. :) There is a huge Catholic population in the area and lots of Catholic churches, although I’m not Catholic. adult son moved from Harrisburg, PA. one year ago to Winston Salem, NC...said he never will return north again...daughter in Georgia...so our place is on the market, hoping it sells as we head South also...I visit both states often and love it...

Charleston is a terrific city. I’ll go out on a limb and guess that you’ll love it. It IS hot in the summer, and so I heartily recommend that you come to cool(relatively), green Asheville for your vacation!!

Good luck with the move. I’m hoping to move our family to the Greenville/Spartanburg area in a few months, if I can sell our house. A bit closer to the mountains but still less than a day’s drive from the coast.
I forgot to mention Westcott Village in Summerville. Nice, clean neighborhood with a golf course.
Churches are EVRYWHERE. You and your wife will have no problem finding one. Charleston has some of the the oldest, most historic and most beautiful churches that I have ever seen.
Husband just reminded me to let you know that if you are narrowing your search to Summerville to stay out of these neighborhoods:
-Kings Grant
-The Bridges of Oakbrook (Certain areas of this neighborhood are nice but some are not)
Some other suggestion for you to consider in Summerville
Brandy Mill
Iron Gate
Quail Arbor
(These neighborhoods are on Old Trolly Road between Historic downtown Summerville and Dorchester Road(a main drag in the area)- convenient to Boeing or Bosch, a straight shot to either facility)
On second thought, avoid Goose Creek unless you are looking in Crowfeild Plantation.
Stay out of Ladson and Hanahan, if you can. They are located between Summerville and Charleston and there is a bit of floating riff raff that comes up from North Charleston to settle in those towns.
If you want the name of a really good real estate agent, I have the guy for you! Really. He spent 30 years in the submarine service and was my Husband’s Master Chief. He our agent and took great care of us when we transferred here and retired.
Less than a day's drive? From Columbia, the mountains or the coast is less than 2 hrs. away. If you're up state, then the coast is about 3-4 hours. That's a mere fraction of a day's drive.
ATP, perhaps?
ATP was the only range in the area. I would love to find an outdoor range close by. Where is Quickshot located?
My favorite gun shop is East Coast. ATP is the largest but their customer service is horrible.
