I can't add too much to what has already been said and would concur that North Charleston might be a last choice for residence although it's not that bad compared to other areas in the US. I'm in West Ashley which is within the Charleston city limits but it's really the "burbs" as Charleston "proper" (the peninsula) is really small.
Having lived here for 26 years I can say that there are many nice places to locate.
As for shooting, I work at what I consider the safest indoor range in the area, Quickshot here in West Ashley. I just got my NRA RSO certification and I teach Concealed Carry at the range. All handguns, rifles up to .308 and shotguns (slugs only) are allowed. We also have full auto rentals (H&K G-36 is my fav) which is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Shoot me a PM when you get here and I can hook you up with some free range time and full auto rental.
