Becoming a bounty hunter may soon get a lot easier.
SpotSquad is a mobile phone application in the works that allows users to report illegally parked cars and get a cut of the fine paid as a reward.
Created by a technology startup in Winnipeg, Canada, the app aims to crowdsource parking enforcement at privately run lots and potentially on public streets.
The reporting process is as simple as taking a photo of the car, which is GPS tagged while optical character recognition reads and records the license plate number, then choosing from a list the type of infraction observed -- everything from expired meters to unauthorized parking in a handicapped spot.
Based on the location of the vehicle, the report is automatically sent to the operator of the lot, or local law enforcement if its on public property. Then personnel is dispatched to issue a notice, ticket or have it towed.

Next step is turn in gun owners.
No opportunities for abuse/misuse THERE! /sarc
See Something, Say Something... :-)
Should follow whoever wrote this app and catch them every single time they screw up.
Not quite yet.
Next will be writing speeding tickets.
There already is a group of do-gooders who purposely drive slow in the fast lane to prevent speeding.
I got behind one 4 months ago who had a backup 3 miles long behind her.
She was driving 55mph in a 75 with a semi in the right lane.
well i wouldn’t use it for most things but i sure would like to stop the selfish people from using the handicap spaces, and i’d sure as heck use it to take pics of cops who are illegally parked.
Can it be used to photograph and report jaywalkers as well?
hmmmm. I’m against it, but what if you see a car with a bumper sticker that says something like “Keep your Rosaries off of my ovaries!” ?
How about an app that lets you report illegal aliens.
“to unauthorized parking in a handicapped spot.”
That stuff steams me! I walk with a cane, and have not applied for a handicapped plate. I constantly see big, black Caddy suvs parking in handicapped spaces, and disgorging a horde of perfectly healthy people. These cars all have a tag that hangs on the rearview mirror. I call the cops! $250 fine. It’s always “minorities”............ Cops oughta go after the doctors that hand these things out!
RATS wondering who is more ratty? Until they come for YOU.
Cough, cough, you are correct.

***At first, I find this technology interesting. But then on balance, it is highly intrusive and rapidly becomes the “tyranny of the majority” and simple fascism. Few people realize that NAZI germany thrived by having citizens denouncing other citizens.
My husband has one because he has diabetic neuropathy. I have one in my car but it is his and I never use it unless he is with me.
I might use it for the people who park in handicap space, put their sticker up, and then run into the store.
What about spotting an illegally occupied White House — is there an app for that?
You could make a lot of money off this just by walking in front of the strip centers, taking pictures of those illegally parked in handicap spaces.
The Law of Unintended Consequences indicates that in a matter of a few short years there will be an epidemic of low speed collisions as people attempt to take photos of illegally parked vehicles while driving. Yet another law will be passed to specifically prohibit the act, and yet another app will be developed to report drivers taking photos of illegally parked vehicles.
