I’m going to see it tomorrow. I have two friends who’ve already seen it and they gave it very good marks.
It seems that most of the critics who have panned it wanted it to be more like Richard Donner’s “Superman.” Well, that was a very good film. But it has already been done, and “Superman Returns” showed us what happens when you try to make it again.
I just saw it. Not bad at all. MILES better than previous Superman movies, which were mostly unwatchable. Some of the fight scenes had too many fast action closeups, but all in all a good movie. It took decades but technology can finally do justice to superhero movies.
Saw it tonight. Loved it.
Any gay scenes...like the James Bond movie?
All in all my wife & I liked it - really good story and character development actually, and good casting - especially Superman. I liked it a lot more than expected.
However, for a 2:28 minute movie they could have cut out at least 28 minutes of gratuitous property and building smashing and explosions, still had tons of such action left, and the movie would have lost nothing.
I swear if they'd smashed another couple dozen buildings more than the couple thousand they smashed throughout the movie, I would have lost it. Toward the end when they got tired of trashing all the cities on Earth and decided to take the fighting into orbit and start smashing satellites, I almost started laughing.
Regardless, a good movie overall and probably the best Superman movie yet. I'd recommend it.
Best Superman movie ever!
I saw it this afternoon.
All these good reviews surprise me.
If a good movie is all about effects and choreography, and wall to wall fist fighting then the movie was great.
Plotwise it totally bombed
There was hardly ANY character development
There was 10 times more alien technology than there was Superman saving the day.
Too many flashbacks to cover early years.
WAY too much collateral damage. NO WAY all those buildings fall without killing thousands of people. Virtually nothing left of the city which Superman didn’t seem to mind punching holes in. Where did all the people go??? the city looked like a nuke hit it, but no dead people on the streets.
WAY too much emphasis on Zod and this new element of Kryptonians being a bunch of test tube breeders.
I was totally disappointed in it overall.
Almost 26,000 reviewers have reviewed it on imdb.com, with a score of 8.4/10.0 ... An excellent overall rating. I ignore what critics say, and reliably count on what viewers my age have said...

Loved it. Loved the character development but really loved the Christian imagery.
Really enjoyed the movie. The casting was excellent. Really was great to see Jor-El do more in this movie. Job well done by Russell Crowe. My only complaint would be the shaky camera and the end seemed to drag on a bit too long.
The Jesus allegory was definitely in this movie. Couldn’t escape it.
Can’t wait for the next one and where they take this.
It isn't “Gone With The Wind”, IT'S A SUPERMAN MOVIE! You know, like in comic books.
I must say Diane Lane had a stand out performance worthy of an Oscar. Not likely in a Superman Movie.
I would characterize this Superman movie as the “Chronicles of Superman” or Superman meets “The Chronicles of Riddick”, with a few Avatar flying things.
This is one of “THE BEST” Superman movies. If you like Superman, you won't be disappointed.
We saw the 3D version. As with most 3D movies I've seen, there just isn't enough 3D STUFF in it.
Go see it. Take the kids. Have some popcorn and enjoy the show.
I just got back from seeing it. Overall, I was happy I saw it, but I was also conflicted. I would say it was at least 100 times better than Superman Returns from a few years ago, but it was only about half as compelling as the first Christopher Reeve 1978 Superman movie. On a scale of 1-10, this was a 6.
Maybe I’m just getting old (44) but I have to agree with many of the previous posters who have noted the gratuitous length of the fight scenes. It literally becomes boring as the special-effects artists find ways to destroy building after building across the New York/Metropolis skyline (by the way, why is every superhero movie taking out their wrath on the buildings of New York? Can’t we get just one super villain taking out Chicago or LA for a change?).
I get it, General Zod and Superman don’t like each other. You don’t have to beat the audience over the head with it. I could have happily traded ALL of the highly CGI-ed fight scenes for a few reasons to care about the characters:
- Lois was just a prop, the movie didn’t provide a reason to care about her relationship with Superman/Clark. She could have died at any time and the movie would have provided the same emotional relevance as a nameless extra dying.
- The movie didn’t offer reasons to deeply care about General Zod, or his crew, other than that they were wrecking lots of stuff, and it would be nice to stop them.
- Perry White, see Lois.
- Even the adult Superman himself. You always gotta root for the guy in the red cape, but beyond the suit, the man himself didn’t make you fall in love with the character. Having said that, the flashbacks in which we see Clark as a child DOES offer some emotional resonance.
On the other hand the movie offers a world of reasons to care about Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and he did not disappoint. Looking back I think he is really the star of this movie, even if his screen time is limited. Also Jor-El’s wife does a decent job, as do Clark’s earth parents. And a special call out to Christopher Meloni. As an army colonel who was basically reprising the same character he plays on Law & Order SVU, nobody glares at everyone like him.
Overall, I would say it was really nice to see Superman flying across the screen again. My hope is that the sequel will invest a little more in the characters and a lot less in fights that go on for seemingly hours at a time. I understand that is what superhero movies are about, but (as
Iron Man, Spider Man and Batman did extremely well) give us some reasons to care deeply about the characters and the people they care about before you start breaking everything in sight.
I’ll pass...
i am completely sick of these superhero movies.
Actually I was sick of superheroes back when i was 16.
It was LOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooong and disjointed.
The writing might have succeeded if they had not been lost in a world of krypton rewrite.
In the end it it just an ancient greek mythology ripoff of heracles.
I would say wait for cable/netflix or whatever costs least.
you could check you emails and look for any interesting FR postings DURING the movie and not mis a single relivent point.
It was ok, not ooooh ahhh good.
not a lazy pathetic pseudo rewrite like the Star Trek II reboot.
