Identity Theft
Vanity | June 13, 2013 | Huskrrrr

I've been Hacked! A thief has obtained my email address, phone number and mailing address. The vandal has sent my information to a number of businessess requesting services and ordered dozens of boxes of mailing supplies to be deivered to my house. So far my credit cards and bank accounts have not been touched nor have any new credit cards been ordered. I have notified the police, the postal inspector web site, my credit report service and the businesses affected. I guess I need to close my email account next or at lesst change the password. The pranks have not cost me any money, just time and aggrevation. Any FReepers have similar stories?

You haven’t been hacked. This in not stolen private information but public information that many people in your life know.

The question you should be asking is, who did you piss off recently?

Call your congress—critter and tell ‘em you don’t appreciate the NSA hacking your every move.

Won’t do any good - but call ‘em anyway.

“did you buy something or sign up for something on the INTERNET ?”

I noticed a large amount of spam shortly after buying a new computer and downloading the Safari browser. They asked for this information.

Could be that you haven’t been shredding your mail after reading or ignoring. Anything with your ID, address or any type of identifying account or business record should always be shredded. The shredded bits should be placed with the wet garbage when you throw it out. How do I know, I’ve seen them going through the trash before the trashmen cometh!

“The shredded bits should be placed with the wet garbage when you throw it out.”

We do shred almost everything, but throw it into recycling. Thanks for the tip.

Yep, the sifting through trash is a Meth addict thing - they do it for hours. But in this case it sounds like you’re the victim of a prank. You do know that you have the right to refuse packages and parcels? It takes the problem to somebody else.

Yes,I refused delivery. You’re right, I guess I should be thankful that so far this is just a prank.

And you’re a teacher, so you have a big pool of suspects.

I would look at the things the person has done, which business they’ve “ordered” services for you from.

Like ordering USPS mailing supplies for you. Easy to do, but not common everyday well known information unless that person has an internet business???

See if you can connect the dots between the types businesses they pranked you with and the personality or activities of someone you know. People tend to use the things and places they are familiar with.

Yes excellent point. Besides the USPS, several heating and cooling companies have been contacted as well as a couple window replacement firms. Hmmmmmm

How to know if it’s you posting here and not the person who stole your online credentials?

Good point. No benefit to the thief if the merchandise is sent to the victim’s house unless of course it is a prank. Also, it is surprising that a business would allow a purchace without a credit card number and related info.
