What do you imagine when you hear the word "welfare"? Most of us think of a minority living in a filthy house with five kids running around while an alcoholic dad sleeps it off face down on the couch ... if there's even a dad at all. I talked in another article about the things politicians will never understand about poor people, but it's not just Washington elites who treat the poor like an alien species. Hell, I find myself thinking in "welfare queen" stereotypes, and I grew up among them.
The problem is that everyone -- from the news media to well-meaning activists -- refer to "the poor" as one group having the same problem, when in reality no two people are in the category for the same reason, and almost none fall neatly into the stereotype. Right now there are millions of people out there who are using government assistance because they are ...

Some language, but an interesting article nonetheless.

Nineteen percent of people on AFDC (one of the most common forms of government aid) are on it for less than seven months...It shows that this part of the system is working exactly as it should.Exactly like it should? 100% - 19% = 81%. Uhm 81% > 19% rather significantly.

Other types are two people cohabitating. One person works, the other person doesn’t work but collects all the entitlement benefits.

If you education, job skills, and attitude only qualify you for a low paying job, Perhaps you should try to come to terms with that.
You built it, you own it, you can improve it.

#4. People in a Temporary Emergency
#3. People Trapped in (and by) the System (No car, no phone, can’t get job to get car and phone. Or barely making it with assistance and no resources or time to get training to get a better job)
#2. People Who Have Been Trained to See It as Normal (Kids of long term welfare recipients)
#1. People Who Have No Say in the Matter (Kids handicapped and elderly)

When you couple “five kids” that you get increasing benefits for with five baby daddies that you get maybe some child support from, then you get a formula for generational welfare. There is no incentive to do the hard thing and work to improve skills and find jobs. Of course if every company had to pay a “living wage”, all of this goes away.

The problem we have right now, is that our stupid trade policies have offshored so many jobs that a massive number of people have joined group #4. And as time goes on, they are moving into categories #3 and #2.
23% unemployment according to shadowstats.com.

The problem we have right now is that our stupid trade policies have offshored so many jobs...And our stupid pro-invasion policies have insourced cheap labor for jobs that remain. The government is even encouraging invader spawn to move up economically and take those better-paying jobs from the middle class. That serves to depress those wages, too.
It's got to be that the puppetmasters decided that the middle class was cutting into their relevance and control of the system.

Well, maybe, but California, Maine, Tennessee, Massachusetts, and Vermont are the top five in percentage of people on welfare.
And DC, New York, Minnesota, and Washington are in the Top Ten.

I know someone on welfare. If you saw her at the mall with her 2 high school age kids, you wouldn’t look twice. She’d look as “normal” as anyone else there. And it’s not that she doesn’t work - she does. She just doesn’t pull in enough to lift her above the “poverty line”. No real message here - other than the person standing next to you in line at the supermarket or for that matter cashing you out at the supermarket could be on some form of assistance.

Thanks, that sure made a mockery of post 11, I wonder what that guy’s agenda was.
