Our Place in the Galactic Neighborhood Just Got an Upgrade

If you imagine the Milky Way as a rippled cookie, our star is in a neighborhood in between two big ripples (the Sagittarius Arm and the Perseus Arm). Before, we thought the Local Arm (or Orion Arm) was just a small spur between the arms. New research using trigonometric parallax measurements, however, suggests the Local Arm could be a “significant branch” of one of those two arms.

In a few words, our stellar neighborhood is a bigger and brighter one than we thought it was.

we stopped our cable service because we mostly got 200 channels of advertising for products we aren’t interested in, plus mind-rotting krapo “programs” ....

we still have a boobtoob and occasionally watch “Nature” or “Nova” but we skip over the midrot krap.

Recall Vladimar Zwyorkin, the Jewish Russian immigrant who invented the main TV tube that made modern electronic TV practical. He envisioned all sorts of wonderful, uplifting, educational and high-cultural programs of instruction, opera, symphonies, to enhance people’s lives.
Asked about it a few years on, he said that... had he known the krappy (my word) programming that would take over broadcasting, that he would have smashed every one of his prototype tubes in his laboratory.
(Note: and that was his comment on 1950’s or 60’s programming, which was not nearly as demeaning and just plain stupid as today’s....)

Ooooo! I love it when that happens! I’ve seen similar night time sights here in Cow Town, WI.

Nothing puts me in my place like a walk after dark to my Back Forty. The fact that I am SUCH an insignificant spec in the Grand Scheme of Things is strangely comforting to me. :)

You mean the nature shows and the science shows filled with global warming/man is a cancer propaganda? The ones that slam the oil/mining industries as planet killers? And lets be honest here. There is not one nature/science show today that does not. Not one.

Good for you that you ditched the cable/dish. But you are still getting pure BS fed into your home, family and mind as truth. And that’s far more destructive and jellofying than the outright fantasy of video games.

We got marble countertops? Alright! Maybe we’ll get some of those butt-washer things so we can really be uptown.

“If you imagine the Milky Way as a rippled cookie, our star is in a neighborhood in between two big ripples”

stop with all this high-falutin sciency talk.
