The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
I ordered a couple dwarf fig trees this year. We’ll see how they manage. Hopefully I won’t have to babysit them during a 2m 100+ spell like we had a couple years ago. Let’s cross our fingers, shall we?

We are staying pretty muddy here too. Still haven’t been able to take delivery on the dirt to go under our swimming poot we bought last year.
Fortunately most of my beds are mels mix, so it doesn’t get water logged and quickly let’s me have a go at working the soil.
Right LOL. I hear those dogs are really great at digging holes, and rolling around the plants.LOL
When it rains it pours - doesn’t it?
But, I was having to water the garden at this time last year so I suppose I shouldn’t be bellyaching about it too much

LOL. Just what I was thinking this morning. Last year at this time we had a great garden, but the rain barrels were almost empty. A few weeks later, we decided to let most of it go and burn up. We had to haul water for the perennials and dwarf orchard.
Big might just be a little understated.LOL
After last year I am not complaining. But yes, it was surreal to watch. My empty cistern is now filled and overflowing. There was at least 5 inches of water standing for a time that would not fit.
Very eye appealing. I have had little time to devote to my flower beds so they do not compare.
It’s enough to keep the birds, bees and butterflies in the yard.

And very pleasant to the human eye. The reason I have several flower beds. I love the beauty in the color presented through flowers. But for me this spring Missouri weather has directed my labor in different areas. I always love to see flower beds with lots of color and display of types of foliage. You did good. And yes, God's creatures do benefit as well.
I think we are ahead of the curve for rain this year. The extended drought had me worried especially for the states like Texas. Hoping they make some headway too.
Hot, sweat running into my eyes, pulling up weeds in the Riverwalk of my garden so the dirt can go into composter, hot, miserable, carry tree limbs from trees hanging over back wall of garden, I hated this day, yesterday Thursday, of cleaning up the garden to prepare for container garden. After son and I worked out there, went straight to the shower to wash my sweaty hair and wash sweat off me.
This is all your fault for having this thread so I would feel guilty that I didn’t know how to grow food plants. All your fault, all your fault, all your fault. There, that makes me feel better that IT’S ALL YOUR FAULT.
Son put the composter together and it’s so big I didn’t think it would fit where it needed to go – but it did. I couldn’t have put it together by myself. Then, we had to clean up all the leaves and dump them in composter. I explained to son how I was changing the garden from dead roses to food. I had ripe tomatoes to prove it. We worked until we were filthy and I hated every minute of it. It helped for him not to have to bag up the leaves and take them to a dumpster.
My Riverwalk (named it for the Riverwalk in San Antonio) is a path of bricks running through at the base of the dirt garden and base of the raised deck. Water comes through a hole on the right side, which is coming through from townhomes to the right of me. The water runs through the brick Riverwalk and out a hole on the left side. This water must drain and the Riverwalk of brick was filled with leaves and dirt and weeds that had gathered there since 2011. If we get a hurricane, that Riverwalk must handle gobs of water going through and if it is hindered, the water will build up and could come in my house. The Riverwalk is now ready for a hurricane that I hope won’t happen.
Why didn’t one of you tell me squash plants are giant plants? There are three planted in dirt and they now look like something from Mars zapped by radiation to monster size. Pretty soon, I’ll see the sexual parts of those plants. They should be rated “X” for sexual content.
The Kentucky Wonder bean plants are growing up the lattice covered back wall. Look, I didn’t fertilize the ground dirt so I don’t know if these bean plants will make beans. After all, they were seeds and I figured they wouldn’t grow, period. One of the Miracle Gro bags has what I think is sweet pepper plants growing and the other has Jalapeno plants maybe. Remember I wrote on the bags and rain washed it off. I do have plastic markers to use next time so I’ll know what is growing in each fabric growing bag.
The wood floor of the large upper deck is black from whatever gets on wood after time in the elements. Son will be back on June 16. I wonder if Lowes rents power washers? That would get the black crap off that wood floor. Do any of you know about renting power washers? I can call Lowes to find out.
I’ve got some grow bags now to fill with potting soil mix and seeds and set them on the dirt in the garden and now have the bird nets to cover them (squirrels and birds you can go to hell), there are the two large containers for big stuff like tomatoes and root plants like potatoes to put on the deck and I have a bird net for those.
Earlier, I bought bags of Miracle Gro potting soil mix to fill all the containers. I had to pay more because I had to get smaller bags I could carry. All those bags are on the lower deck that has a roof over it. When I step out the sliding glass door, I on the lower deck with the roof. Next Monday, I’ll start planting and send Johnny some sesame seed flower plant seed. I’m waiting until Monday so I can rest up after yesterday’s marathon work/sweat/move/muscle hurt session. And, don’t forget, IT’S YOUR FAULT.
My son is an award winning documentary film director (look him up on the net, “Wayne Derrick documentary film director”) and one company he works with (he’s an independent film director), has a special deal some of you might want to get. For $15,000 you can have dinner with him in the states. In England, it costs you $20,000 to have dinner with him. Or, you could come to my house when he is here, and have dinner with him free.
Last year he was in the states making the film for American audiences, “Heroes Behind the Badge” which documents the deaths of police officers. He is making “Heroes Behind the Badge II” now which documents police officers who were wounded and now live with the disabilities created by those wounds. He is exceptional and does whatever work he needs to do in my garden and has fun doing it.

Thanks! We enjoy the fauna as much as we do the flora. We have a fish pond which acts as the neighborhood watering hole. So we get just about everything around her at night.
