The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
The home spread. Between working on the place, and having to spend Friday afternoon & evening in Rapid City for serious shopping & the annual dinner-meeting of our electric co-op, I just haven’t had a chance to get on here.

About 18 cow-free acres, out of 310. The Google Earth image data is 9-21-11, so some improvements/additions don’t show.
Yesterday evening, we unexpectedly had to sort through two 16 pound boxes of sweet cherries friends brought us that were going bad; then cook them to be juiced. They were given 4 boxes, and shared; about half were usable, so their chickens and ours got a royal treat. A truck refer unit failed during transport.
Today, it was using the tiller to weed the far half of the garden, plus till the paths & between the rows in the near half, plus do some more planting...bush limas, started leeks, and flowers...an coffee cans. The cans have holes in the bottom, and are between the squash plants: they get filled with water, and slowly deep-water the plants.
Last night, we had a fire in the stove all night; it got down to 38 in town and a bit lower here, though no frost. Snow was expected in portions of the higher elevations of the central or northern Black Hills.
Having spent a few years “commuting” between Oregon & South Dakota, I can sympathize. Glad to hear you’ll be back to a one-home family again, and where you really want to be.
Mea Culpable!
We made it through that last round unscathed. Very lucky so far...
It looks like pictures of an ornamental eggplant, also sounds like what they call “fried egg tree” when the blooms are open. I haven’t personally seen any of these except in pictures but just throwing this out there.
I am now the proud Papa of an $80 chick: $40 for the incubator; and $40 for the automatic egg rotator. It hatched this morning.
28 eggs to go...one was bad & had to be tossed; I had put 30, not 40, in it.
I use Photo Bucket, not Flikr, but the old “Right Click/OpenImageInNewTab” should work; then just highlight & copy the address URL.
Solution Number 2; right-click on the picture, then click “Properties” (or “Inspect Element”) and highlight & copy the URL listed, adding”.jpg” if necessary, and paste that into the post’s Img HTML tag.
BTW, Photo Bucket has changed its layout, too, and is much less user-friendly. These sites never make changes to benefit the user, it seems.
Red, remember when JADB put up growing areas on this site?
Is this what you mean? http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/2832507/posts
How are the onions doing?
Flickr has changed their layout 3 times in the past 3 months and and I had to ask Lady Bender for help... and yes she found a tiny iCon at the bottom of the page
Speaking of onions, I have to remember to put up a pick of these very invasive onion things my husband planted a couple of years ago.
There were supposed to be both onions and garlic plants - and neither “worked out”. Now, I don’t know what they really are - but they spread like fricken mad and don’t produce anything edible.
I’ve spent hours digging them out this year so I can plant useful things - ‘cause hubby keeps finding other chores. Humph.
A mix of onion plants and garlic plants; or a single plant that was supposed to be some sort of combination/dual-use?
A mix of onion and garlic. He planted them in TWO different places, and it seems that he mixed them in together. Or they just hopped around as they rapidly multiplied.
I decided to let some stay through this season to see if they produce anything edible - but now I am regretting this decision. And digging up a bunch. I am putting them on the stream bank - they will be brilliant there for erosion control.
I am looking for a more basic video for those just starting.

Seeding, "walking", or just splitting/dividing?
Great minds, and all that: I put some of our Everlastings in spots along a couple of our ranch roads that were starting to erode & gully. I'll find out next year if it helped or not.
The onions are doing great. Some of the leaves wilted off, but then new ones are coming on. They are in a syrup pot, so they can do their thing.
Yes, that was the site. Thank you.
I swear they “walked”. I find them yards away from where they were originally planted. And you can’t just pull them - even the tiny ones. The tops break off and the bulb stays in the ground. Have to fork them up.
I wish my chicken would develop a taste for them.
If it wasn’t for that terrific taste and the knowledge that your produce has been grown just like you want it, then gardening might just be the pits.
The great flavor and “clean” produce is what makes it worth the effort.LOL
Good for you guys. It gives you a little time to get things done. I know you’ll be glad to be home-afterall, there is no place like home.LOL
Well, I have found the heirlooms to be quite flavorful. So glad you seem to be having success with them now.
