A retired professional man has become the first British dementia patient to end his life at the Dignitas clinic.
The wealthy 83-year-old chose to travel to the controversial clinic in Switzerland because he did not want to face the agony of the progressive disease.
He is believed to be the first person to use the clinics services solely because of dementia.
The unnamed man from England went to the clinic after obtaining a report from a psychiatrist stating he was mentally competent to choose to kill himself.

How frightening is THAT ?
If you’re not healthy enough to do the job yourself, you’re not healthy enough to make that choice at all. I don’t understand getting a doctor involved.
It’s kinda like brake-pad replacement. Anybody could do it in their own garage, but everyone just wants to pay someone to do the job.
That does not look like a parallel comparison.
The doctors get themselves involved. Guess why.

Welcome to your brave new world!
As an aside... how many psychs are mentally balanced enough to trust with any life or death decision? Essentially all of the shrinks I’ve met over the years made *me* look sane, by comparison... I think most of ‘em get into the trade because they’re half (or more) nuts.
I have been personally wallowing in the comfort of older age and approaching senility, but I still have enough brain to be aware and afraid enough to speak out to anyone whom will listen to me.
Suffering from dementia but mentally competent. Hmmmm.
If man truly has free will, isn’t deciding the time and manner of your own death the ultimate expression of the freedom to make our own choices?
Free will is about making the right choices rather than the wrong ones. Were the Founding Fathers advocates of suicide when age brings infirmity? It appears not.
Indeed.
A close inlaw has had dementia for over a decade, he was extremely upset at first as he was brilliant in his field and was losing his marbles slowly. Eventually he lost it all, including his ability to walk or speak(except gibberish)
had he realized he would have to be changed like a baby and that he was just a blank slate lying in a bed for almost a decade. I know he would have hoped he would have passed a long time ago.
religious doctrine notwithstanding, I refuse to have that type of existence.
Here’s a video of a French lesbian using their “services.”

ooh! ooh! ooh! I know this one!!
... is it THE MONEY??
So... I expect the doctors want to be paid IN ADVANCE?
And what if you can’t afford it? Will the government pay for it?
Follow me on this...
So we need to set up a government program to cover the costs of those who WANT TO commit assited suicide.
Then, to cover the costs of those THE GOVERNMENT wants to commit assisted suicide...
Gotta keep those soylent green factories stocked

I know what you’re saying. As an RN, I’ve seen the worst.
If I was moving into end stage dementia, I’d just prefer that they allow me to live naturally, without life prolonging medications ...no BP meds, no nothing — just let me go and die as I should — through the natural course. I feel, honestly, this is how it used to be with dementia, so we didn’t see the extreme cases.
It’s a terrible ethical dilemma brought to us by advanced technology. I’m sorry — why treat my heart failure if my brain doesn’t even function anymore?
I pray that is not God’s plan for me.
The very successful shrink I knew best - a close friend - wound up destroying his marriage and career, ruining his health and ultimately getting dead because of the substances he snorted up his nose. Sad.
