A Screamer at the Grocery Store
Self | May 25 2013 | KittenClaws

Posted on 05/25/2013 3:38:53 PM PDT by KittenClaws

I was browsing the isles at the grocery store today when a man out of my view began screaming the "F" word. Women around me looked around, looked at me, and sort of scurried away from the sound.

There was a general "humming" of voices thereafter and still the occasional outburst of the F word. I do not have a CCL, so I made my way to the kitchen appliance section and found a good concealable knife.

Making my way to the end of the aisle, I saw the man in question. There was a manager trying to calm him, he was screaming " go ahead and call the police, I'll kill you before then".

Being a good distance from this man, I chose to keep him in sight. If he were to break loose, I wanted to know which direction he ran in relation to myself. So I just stood and watched, I was certain he did not have me in view since he was concentrating on all of the men in ties attempting to calm him.

People around me were stunned, but they seemed calm and secure in the knowledge that the police were on the way. The man was just a jerk after all, what could happen?

That's when this female clerk approached me. I guess she saw something in my stance.

She says to me "just stay back and finish your shopping, this is being handled". I looked at her pudgy body and pasty face and wondered what gave her the authority, training and judgement to tell ME how to act in this situation?

In an instant, I recalled 911, all of those managers and supervisors telling people to stay, that help was on the way and how some of those people wound up with the choice of burning to death or jumping out of windows.

I sent her on her way with the comment that I was more than capable of taking care of myself and I did not require her help.

It’s not getting tough out there.... The IRS audited some folks and harassed about 500 conservative organizations - it’s not the end of the world.

You need to take a deep breath Kitten... everything’s going to be fine. The good guys are going after the IRS - and if Obama’s a Nixon - filled with dirty tricks to play on people in his ‘enemies list’ he’ll be impeached.

Relax - the law works... slowly sometimes, but it works.

I never said it was right. I said it was non threatening to me. As in not a life or death situation.

There are perhaps, those who should learn the difference between being threatened physically, rather than just being offended.

For most sheeple the clerk would have been right like those in the WTC, who stayed because a “supervisor” thought it best. Yeah, I guess jumping out of a window was better than burning to death...,....

No pasty faced clerk will EVER determine my fate. Do with yours as you will.

My $0.02 since I was not actually there...

There are a minority of reasons for choosing to stop and remain in place within close sight of a deadly threat (felony assault).

If the guy turned to you and started sprinting, you'd be in the worst position: unarmed and facing an imminent lethal threat.

I always CCW. If I can’t in a certain state etc, I don’t travel there.

I think it was a typo - ‘recounted’ is my guess.

Look, it wasn't your call in the store. There wasn't eminent danger. If the guy had started stabbing people then you and many others could have stepped in - but that wasn't happening. Calling store security would be a good first step... "Hello, I'm in the _________ department of your store and there seems to be a problem with a customer - I'm concerned for the clerk - could you send store security?"

My wife and I both have permits. One day she was heading to WalMart to shop and set her gun on the table because “she wouldn’t need it there”. I told her that all the folks killed in convenience store robberies, the Theater in Colorado, Fort Hood, etc., felt the same way. She picked it up then and never leaves without it. She also keeps it or another on the nightstand because our alarm went on the fritz and started squalling one night. I grabbed my .357 and started a slow creep to see if anyone was in/trying to get in. She said she felt useless when I grabbed a gun and she didn’t have one handy to back me up. Get your permit and become intimately familiar with whatever you decide to carry. Be safe.

Good morning.

so I made my way to the kitchen appliance section and found a good concealable knife.

Good situational awareness, and adaptability.

Good advice is to always keep your head on a swivel, ears opened , and hands out of pockets and/or clear. All of the time.

You just never know when all hell is going to break loose.

My kids worked at grocery stores for many years. Rest assured one of those men in ties standing around the screamer had taken the gun out of the safe and was ready to use it.

“Do you just let them all get away with whatever they want?”

Me? No, I’d say shoot ‘em. But they (the gov’t) wouldn’t let you get away with that. And anything other than that would have to be touch-close which would invite a knife in the heart. And is over-priced clothing that isn’t even yours worth that risk? The thugs aren’t smart enough to make a risk assessment (25-Life for murder vs. 2-5 for shoplifting vs. a $50 pair of jeans) but you should be.

Most of the concealed carry types I know figure they (we) are not cops and we’re not there to save the world - just our family. When I carry, it is a 5-shot revolver. And no, I don’t whip it out because someone is screaming. By the time I’m pulling a gun out, I’m very close to shooting.

As George Zimmerman discovered, even in a "stand your ground" state, when you shoot, expect the life you used to live to be over. I will only fire to protect somebody in my "circle of protection" (family, self, friends). I will only draw if I've committed to firing if the bad guy does not immediately turn and run.

“I will only draw if I’ve committed to firing if the bad guy does not immediately turn and run.”

Agreed. I’ve only pulled a gun once, about 30 years ago. There were more of them than I had bullets, and my gun was a 22. But I figured I was going to either be beaten to a pulp or killed. I pulled the 22 revolver, brought it up about 30 deg, and looked at the closest guy. The group stopped trying to surround me, so I angled off and made my way clear. Had the closest guy started for me, I would have shot him in the face at about 5-8 feet...

Just one of those statistics on gun use not found in any official statistics, since I didn’t report anything...
