A Screamer at the Grocery Store
Self | May 25 2013 | KittenClaws

Posted on 05/25/2013 3:38:53 PM PDT by KittenClaws

I was browsing the isles at the grocery store today when a man out of my view began screaming the "F" word. Women around me looked around, looked at me, and sort of scurried away from the sound.

There was a general "humming" of voices thereafter and still the occasional outburst of the F word. I do not have a CCL, so I made my way to the kitchen appliance section and found a good concealable knife.

Making my way to the end of the aisle, I saw the man in question. There was a manager trying to calm him, he was screaming " go ahead and call the police, I'll kill you before then".

Being a good distance from this man, I chose to keep him in sight. If he were to break loose, I wanted to know which direction he ran in relation to myself. So I just stood and watched, I was certain he did not have me in view since he was concentrating on all of the men in ties attempting to calm him.

People around me were stunned, but they seemed calm and secure in the knowledge that the police were on the way. The man was just a jerk after all, what could happen?

That's when this female clerk approached me. I guess she saw something in my stance.

She says to me "just stay back and finish your shopping, this is being handled". I looked at her pudgy body and pasty face and wondered what gave her the authority, training and judgement to tell ME how to act in this situation?

In an instant, I recalled 911, all of those managers and supervisors telling people to stay, that help was on the way and how some of those people wound up with the choice of burning to death or jumping out of windows.

I sent her on her way with the comment that I was more than capable of taking care of myself and I did not require her help.

The man didn't run and the police did arrive. But, it could have turned out differently.

And if it had, at least I know that I will think for myself and not depend on others to tell me what to do.

I am going to take a CCL class as well, its getting rough out here.

I know the poor girl was probably trying to help, but perhaps she was more concerned with the stores reputation than my safety.

I almost spoke to the manager about it. Almost.

I think I would have gone to the tools section and got a pointed shovel or maybe an axe. Probably would just have stood a distance away and watched.

More scared for her job than anything IMO. Would have been a waste to talk to the Manager. He/She’d cite insurance regs or policy.

I think the clerk was right. You should have stayed away.

I think you should take a CCL clas. One of the things you will learn is the best approach is to leave and distance yourself, if possible.

I would like to add that if a store employee asked me to leave, I would have done so.

I know the poor girl was probably trying to help, but perhaps she was more concerned with the stores reputation than my safety.

We live in a rural area, our nearest neighbor is a mile away. Several weeks ago a man stabbed somebody in a local village about 30 miles away and jumped in his car. The local sheriff and state police started chasing him. He abandoned his car and went on foot into the woods. He walked within 50 yards of our house. Of course we had heard the warnings and and prepared ourselves. The perp was captured a couple of days later several miles from our house.

Here is the rest of the story. A couple of days later we were having dinner with three other couples, one of whom is very liberal. When we recanted our story (they asked about it because it made the local news) the libs asked "What were you thinking, arming yourselves and hunkering down? Didn't you know the police would handle it?".

We replied there were about 30 fed marshals, state police, local sheriffs, dogs, helicopters, etc., in the vicinity. It would take any of them at least five minutes to get to us AFTER something was reported to be happening to us. We would rather clean up somebody's elses blood than our own. The libs still did not get it.

I think the girl was not trying to help and was not concerned about the stores reputation. I think she is a lib and cannot fathom protecting oneself in danger.

I wasn’t even close . If I had to determine the distance, I’d say more than 60 feet. All I was doing was watching. For my own benefit. None of her business.

Btw I couldn’t leave. He was between me and the door out The only door out.

And I was thinking CCL because I’d rather have more than a 3 dollar knife to defend myself.

I was in a Dollar General and watched a guy changing into a shirt and slacks and dumping his old stuff. I was waiting at the checkout to help bust him. The all female staff would have had to let him go.

I just can't let stuff like that slide by.

Probably not. But I’d be a good person to have “at your back”. I’m not letting some slime ball get away with hurting me or others. I’ll go down fighting.

Store employee did not ask me to leave, she told me to keep on shopping. Like nothing was going on.

Think if five or more of you had gone to the kitchen tools section and all picked up large kitchen knives and had surround this turkey with him knowing it.

How threatening do you think he would have been after that?
