I knew a white guy born in South Africa to American parents who came to the U.S. to go to college. His innocent and earnest efforts to join the college’s African-American Students’ Union went pretty much as you’d imagine.

I have a friend who is a democrat. I know, I know, but he is slowly coming around to our way of thinking.
He told me he attended a state democratic leadership meeting with about 50 people in the room. He was one of about a half a dozen white guys. He didn't say much because it was quite evident to him that the vast majority in the room did not like white, straight guys.
He said if you are a minority, women-studies-type female or gay you have a home in the democratic party.
