UN urges world to eat more insects (over 2 billion already do)

Eating more insects could help fight world hunger, according to a new UN report.

The report by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization says that eating insects could help boost nutrition and reduce pollution.

It notes than over 2 billion people worldwide already supplement their diet with insects.

However it admits that "consumer disgust" remains a large barrier in many Western countries.

Wasps, beetles and other insects are currently "underutilised" as food for people and livestock, the report says. Insect farming is "one of the many ways to address food and feed security".

"Insects are everywhere and they reproduce quickly, and they have high growth and feed conversion rates and a low environmental footprint," according to the report. Nutritional value

The authors point out that insects are nutritious, with high protein, fat and mineral content.

They are "particularly important as a food supplement for undernourished children".

Aren’t lobsters, crabs and shrimp basically oversized bugs? I’ll stick with those.

My personal rule is to never eat anything with more than 4 legs.
Shrimp are the only exception.

>> The UN can eat ...

Purina Dung Beetle Chow. Is that what you were thinking, more or less?

Really, the only major difference between the UN and a dung beetle is that the dung beetle does useful work for us.

Ducks are death on slugs, as well.

When I was a kid, our neighbor had a short handful of ducks. Dad used to ask her to bring them over to our garden for a morning whenever the slugs were particularly bad.

Garden was saved. Dad was happy. Ducks were well-fed (and presumably happy). The only losers were the slugs, which we weren't concerned about. A Win-win all around.....

Slugs make excellent fishing bait, as well. ;-)

Does the UN serve insects at its banquets or in its dining room? If not, why not?

Not surprised that Caterpillars are high in iron.

I’d prefer to feed the insects to fish then eat the fish, using the fish offal to fertilize the vegetable garden.

“...steak and a cracklin’ cold beer...make it two....”

Make sure to garnish the steak with a crust of barbecued, flambeed grasshopper.

Think of it this way; you’ll help to make some UN pogue’s worthless existence a little brighter!!!

You’ll be “Making a Difference!!”

I’ll turn bug eater when the U.N. headquarters cafeteria serves up bugs for their delegates, instead of the usual prime rib, shrimp cocktails, and Chilean sea bass. Until then, and as always, FUUN.

Ooo, sea bugs. Along with lobsters and their freshwater friends, crayfish.

I really don't know why I'm squeamish about bugs when I readily eat their aquatic equivalents. Maybe it's a case of ten legs good, six legs bad.

I suggest that the UN be moved to one of those countries that eat insects instead of in NYC.

I know this is extremely politically incorrect, but they’ve got to speak to my wife about this. She’s the one who does almost all the cooking.

I didn’t think anything ate ticks. The spasm of revulsion that my dog goes through when he smells one is amazing.

Chickens. Chickens will crap in thier food and then eat it.Maggots are treats to them. And if you have never cleaned a chicken you have missed something. We used to scald them in hot water after killing them to make the feathers easier to remove. THAT smell is somthing you will never forget. While I do eat chicken, I try not to think about that much. Lots of old cowpokes here in Texas won’t touch chicken.
