Stonington A Quaker Hill man was charged with reckless driving Saturday after police say he drove 139 miles per hour on Interstate 95.
Stewart V. Williams, 25, of [Adress redacted by Moi --TSR], Quaker Hill, was charged with reckless driving, greater than 85 mph.
According to State Police, Williams was traveling northbound near exit 92 when a trooper used a laser clock to read the speed of his 2012 Audi R8 at 139 miles per hour in a 65-miles-per-hour zone. Williams was stopped and taken into custody. He was released on a $500 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear at GA 10 in New London on May 17.
Downhill? With hurricane force wins at your back? :-)
“winds”
That same criteria applies to a great many things in life.
Notably construction work.
I did 160 in a rented Dodge Magnum on a business trip to London Canada in 2009. There was still plenty of speed left in the Dodge but I got nervous and backed off. I even took a picture on my phone to prove it. My buddy had a good laugh when I showed him the picture. Turns out I was doing 160 KPH which is only about 99MPH.
140+ in a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner 440/6-pack. With 5 dudes and pedal to spare.
Yeah. My brother in law was on I-90 in Montana in his Countach and for a brief couple of miles was racing a corvette pretty deep into the triple digits. He backed off as they passed a cop. The corvette sped up and the cop could not catch him. Though my brother in law was pulled over, he was not ticketed. There was no traffic and, frankly, they were both “adult” about it. We do all sorts of things that are more dangerous than eating oatmeal at the breakfast table. And some things actually look a lot more risky than they really are, and vice versa.
Without risk, there is no life.

By anecdotal, I meant it was the equivalent of this: One of the women I work with saw a chiropractor, while doing a neck adjustment, “cause” a stroke in her mother.
I still use a chiropractor.
I was coming back from Alabama to CA in a 1972 chevy nova, with a 350 in it, driving in Arizona doing 100 MPH when I noticed a car coming up behind me in the fast lane(I was in the right lane, night time, no other cars around), I paid no attention until it was right beside me and matched speed. I glanced over and saw it was an Arizona State Trooper. He waved and then took off like a rocket. I slowed down to about 80 for a while after that.
Surely makes you lose your mind,
And as for bikes...anyone with the most basic understanding of physics can easily imagine what might happen to a rider involved in an accident at 70mph....or even 40mph.
I’d love to hang glide as well.
But at that speed, it's difficult to avoid the feral hogs along that highway.
Back when my brother worked for GM in Detroit, they provided pool cars for business trips. If you were going to, say, Toronto, they’d give you one with a kph speedo.
One time, he and a co-worker headed to Canada on business but were complaining just how much of a dog the car was; couldn’t seem to get it much over 120.
Only when they noticed just how fast they got to their destination did it occur to them that they were actually driving with a MPH-calibrated speedo and had been travelling at well over 100+ for like 1-1/2 hours.
They were lucky - and fortunate that the GM POS they were driving actually withstood the abuse.
In NJ they used to have a “Corvettes only” Toys for Tots Run in October sponsored by Kerbeck, the Corvette dealer in AC. For about two hours they closed the AC expressway from the last rest stop to AC. It was about 20 miles, essentially straight and four lanes each way. You could go as fast as you wanted...this was the main draw. We were going 166...and people were passing us. Usually there were 800-900 Corvettes participating. The cops who were closing the entry ways would radar you for laughs. They stopped doing it a couple years ago...I guess some LIBs got their panties in a serious wad.
With those old suspensions, 140 must have been more.... exciting.
I was on the A6 once, on the downhill side toward the flats you reached East of the mountains toward Mannhein, when I was passed by a Turbo Carrera. I tried to keep up. Now, since I was coming down the mountainside I was already top ended, but I did accelerate. How fast did I go? I can't say, but it was faster than 85 MPH!
I moved across country in 1997. I drove a 1990 Ford Ranger with a 5-speed stick and no air conditioner loaded with my stuff. You come out of Salt Lake City toward Nevada and cross the salt flats on I-80. After that last gas station, the speed limit becomes a suggestion apparently.
I was going as fast as that truck would go (probably between 85 and 90). I tried 4th gear at about 4,500 RPM and 5th gear (OD) at about 3,000 RPM. 4th gear would go faster but the screaming engine was unnerving. Still I felt like a bug trying to stay out of the way of other, more serious open road travelers. A full sized van passed me so fast the wind damn near pushed my off on to the shoulder.
I was pretty envious that day.
I do not care to share some of my speed “experiments” as a youth. I thank God that nobody ever got hurt.
