WASHINGTON (AP) -- Any day now, billions of cicadas with bulging red eyes will crawl out of the earth after 17 years underground and overrun the East Coast. The insects will arrive in such numbers that people from North Carolina to Connecticut will be outnumbered roughly 600-to-1. Maybe more.

Awww...they don’t bite ya.
Unless you are one of many species of birds. They love 'em!
It’s more of an orgy, really...;)
That is a TYPE of party!
;)
And have lots and lots of sex :) That's what all the buzzing is about. Wonder how the females make a choice? Decisions, decisions, decisions. Bachelor #1 or Bachelor #2 or... Bachelor #341,289,402.
As kids (LOVED bugs) we used to pick the emerging nymphs off the sidewalk in the evening on their way to the nearest tree to hatch. We’d let them emerge from their shells on our bedroom curtains and wake up to adult cicada’s buzzing around our room. What fun!
Forget that, then...I’m not building them an apartment.
They emerged in 2011 here in middle Tennessee. They were loud and there were a lot of them.
You should try putting one of these on your bare arm. They have a vice-like metallic grip that is memorable.
Are you freaking now? :)
They’re saying they’ll be south of me.
I’m bummed out.
I love listening to them and the squirrels love munching on them.
I’m skeptical of the forecast as the squirrels and crows have been gathering in what sure seems like anticipatory hordes.
I hope...:)
They did during the 2004 eruption. The front ends of the MetroRail trains were heavily splattered with cicada carcases. Truly disgusting.
Since they are all here legally they should be given EBT cards
17 years? That’s nothing. I found a bag of Sea Monkeys that I ordered as a kid. I kid you not, I put them in water and Sea Monkeys came out a few days later!
At 600-to-1 odds, it’s not fun for any person/animal to get “swarmed” by a hundreds or thousands. I had to use brooms to clean-off livestock during the last 16-17yr cycle. And there were bite welts.
They’ll make some nice compost in the forests, after denuding the trees and shrubs. I hope the birds remember what to do. Heh.
Well, here is a close-up of these suckers:
Keep your distance.
I envy you...life would be so much easier if bugs didn’t bother me.
I love snakes, mice, all those things, but the most overwhelmingly numerous life form, yeah, that has to be the one....
I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Everything I’ve read says this swarm is gonna be historic.
(sheesh)
When it rains cats & dogs, that’ll be a good indicator.
Are they edible by humans?
Might be a good source of protein during the expected Obama famine (related to the Ukrainian Stalin famine of 1933 that intentionally starved about 7 million to death).

My Uncle was a POW in Germany in WW-II and they had to eat whatever bugs they could find to survive.
Some versions of locusts can be eaten in a pinch, apparently, and they aren’t bad roasted.
Whatever Stalin did, IMHO, Obama is capable of doing.
We’d better be ready.
When I lived in Texas and Arkansas, I used to love listening to cicadas in the summertime...
