PTA's 'White Trash Wednesday' angers Federal Way parents

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- An electronic sign out front welcomes visitors to Sunnycrest Elementary School in the Federal Way School District; what it doesn't mention is that next week is "Teacher Appreciation Week" - and that this year's effort's aren't exactly getting an A grade from parents in the neighborhood.

"Wow. You're kidding, right?" asked Karissa Edwards, as she strolled through the neighborhood with her daughter Tuesday. "That's not appropriate for school, whether it be elementary or high school - any of it."

Edwards was looking at an email sent from the school's PTA to local parents outlining next week's Teacher Appreciation Week. The theme - "Talkin' Trash" - is broken down by day, from "Muffin Top Monday," providing breakfast to school staff, to "Tempt Me Tuesday," where teachers would get 5-minute massages on their breaks.

The biggest concern among parents, however, appeared to be over another theme: "White Trash Wednesday," where barbeque would be served to staff on garbage can lids.

"It was incredibly offensive," said Chris King, father to an 8-year old at the school. "I'm mixed race. I'm half-black and half-white, and not only do I hate the term but the term doesn't have a place in elementary school."

"Absolutely it's a derogatory term," King continued, "and I don't think anybody wants to be called ('white trash.')"

The PTA president, Amy Beckner, declined to answer questions Tuesday about where the themes came from.

"I don't have anything to say," Beckner said, before closing the front door to her home.

The really offensive part of this is that these teachers are being treated like royalty. They should "appreciate" that they already make more than three-quarters of the population when you factor in benefits.

A former coworker of mine went to school in Florida where they had ‘Cracker Day’. The white kids were threatened, chased and beaten if caught. From what she said, no authoritative figure ever stepped in to say it was wrong for black kids to bully, harrass and beat white kids.

So how do you think black people would feel about white kids showing up in blackface?

How much in damages would any offended party be awarded with profuse apologies from the school board and an ‘acting stupidly’ comment from you-know-who? But white people are supposed to ‘suck it up’?

I’d only be offended if it wasn’t true - the trash part.

I wouldn’t be offended by black people showing up in white face. After all, if they want to portray a white person, they should try to look the part, otherwise no-one will get it.

“I don’t have anything to say,” Beckner said

...so she’s shocked!? How dare honkeys complain after they’ve spent so many years oppressing blacks!~sarc. Who’s performing the teacher messages? Students? How about “Welfare Wednesday”? “Food Stamp Friday”?

Senator Robert Byrd (D) continued to use the word ‘nigger’ well into the 1990s if not beyond. He defended his continued use of the word by explaining that there are “white niggers” as well as “black niggers”. And liberals honored him at his funeral.

Liberalism is a mental disorder.

“My kids’ school has a day where the Kindergarteners dress like old people for the 100th day of school ... sweaters, shawls, walkers, canes, white spray-painted hair. Its fun for the kids.’

=

Isn’t that just adorable. /sarcasm.

I’m 80,and have no shawl,no walker,no cane, and my hair never turned gray. I haven’t a clue what sweaters have to do with it-—even infants wear sweaters.

Gee,what fun those kids must have giggling about those who do need walkers and canes.

Unbelievable !

In the article, she mentions that a local restaurant serves BBQ on trashcan lids. I’d think that they are copying that place — some local lore

Muffin top Monday and the massages though — that’s a bit creepy

Good grief. My 92-year-old grandmother thought it was cute ... and she actually had a walker.

Never known somebody from the WWII generation that was quite so fussy about something so harmless as a kindergartener dressing up like a 100-year-old.

So much for stoicism.

The WWII generation was rightly taught to respect their elders.

Encouraging kindergarteners to treat them as objects of mockery isn't the slightest bit amusing and plants a bad seed in their minds.

Hey, why not a Cerebral Palsy day or a Terminal Cancer Patient Day for a real hoot?

And elders rightly understood how not to take themselves so seriously that they would regard a kindergartener’s stereotypical 100-year-old costume as “disrespect”.

Thanks,Madam D. I was beginning to wonder if my sense of humor had become warped in my dotage.

I remember my grandmother struggling with a walker after she went through surgery for a broken hip. It was a real knee-slapper, especially when the pain was written all over her face.

She never complained, and soldiered on.

I learned to have compassion for the elderly struggling silently to maintain their dignity and trying not to burden others.

These kids are being taught the wrong lesson, your cavalier dismissal notwithstanding.
