Wilmington police fatally shot a dog Tuesday night during a street-to-street search for a driver who reportedly fled when officers tried to pull him over, an official said.
Lucy Crockett, a spokeswoman for the Wilmington Police Department, said officers shot the unleashed dog after it tried to attack a police K-9 team involved in the search.
The incident began about 9:43 p.m. Tuesday when an officer ran a tag and the car's owner came back as having a suspended license. After the officer activated his blue lights, the driver pulled into a driveway in the 400 block of Evans Street, jumped out of the car and ran toward Clay Street, Crockett said.
Police set up a perimeter. A K-9 team tracked the suspect to nearby Maides Avenue, where it encountered the unrestrained dog.
The dog's breed was not immediately clear. Police reports describe it as a pit bull, however photographs provided to the StarNews suggest something else.
In any case, the dog, Crockett said in a media advisory, "went nose to nose with the K-9, as the handler tried to pull the K-9 away.
"Another officer tried to make the pit bull back off," she continued. "But the pit bull attacked the K-9, going first for his face and then trying to bite his throat." So an officer shot the dog to stop the attack.
The police department is reviewing this latest incident, a routine that unfolds any time police fire their guns.
A neighbor on Maides Avenue said the dog was "the friendliest dog in the neighborhood.

Short of having video to dispute the statement I’m going with the cops on this one.
Dogs will go after other dogs that invade their territory or neighborhood.
Are stun guns only for old ladies in wheel chairs?
I too.
Don’t know the neighborhood but if it’s the typical, not shocking if it’s a PBT. And not shocking a PBT would attack a dog. Unleashed, this is not territory unless it really is a stray. Relentless attacks on a dog in any circumstance is not shocking for this type.
I should say seeing the single pix this may be a German Shepherd type or similar, possibly mutt of such. Would be nice to see the head. Looks a might brachyacephalic, but unsure.
It looks a -lot- like Muff, my gramma’s Husky/Beagle mix.
[may they both rest in peace]
It seems that cops have become some of the most avid liars of all time.
Like obama, it seems that they lie about everything all the time.
The dog's breed was not immediately clear. Police reports describe it as a pit bull, however photographs provided to the StarNews suggest something else.
Y'all just can't help yourselves can you?
Bunch of liars.
I read the whole thing. Hence why I made the supposition, albeit before seeing any pix. Which made me change my mind for this case.
Generally I’d agree, but we need more face views. The body is not, but the snout is a bit short. Could be any kind of mutt.
For pity sake. It most certainly could NOT be “any kind of mutt”.
It clearly isn’t a poodle, or a great dane, or a mexican hairless, or a huskey or a pit bull for that matter.
Looks more like a GSD mix than anything else to me.
Apparently you did not read my follow-on post.
It does but we still don’t see the head. Could be a GS/Belgian/spitz mutt. That means mixed with something else, is all.
If the dog was not a stray dog,and didn’t break free of restraint, the owners are idiots and the wrong party got shot, IMO. They, and not the police, are responsible for the dog’s death.
No puppies or kittens?
I prefer not to side with those who have been caught in at least one lie in their “official story”. Your mileage may vary.
